But its not-- The closest is if you play double-blind where you tick all of none of the research prioity boxes and even then I believe testing showed that there were tendencies toward certain techs being researched more frequently

The manual said that non blind research is random. It's not every tech that is available for research.

That is actually true if you don't have a clear view of the tech tree and choose next tech carefully.

Or for that matter stumbles across a AA that gives you a tech that you DON'T want at the current path of research. I prefer to reload if I get Industrial base too early.

I think that you're referring to the following passage from the manual (pp. 119-120):

If you disable blind research, you select specific technologies to work towards. However, the list of available technologies at any given time is random, and does not necessarily include every technology for which you have completed the prerequisites.

This means that when you choose a new technology to research, the list of options will contain only techs for which you have the prerequisites. However, some techs for which you do have the prerequisites may not be present.

For example, you may have researched both Industrial Economics and Planetary Networks, which are the prerequisites for Industrial Automation. However, Industrial Automation might not appear on the list of technologies to research. That's what the manual means when it states that the list of technologies is random. (IIRC the list of available techs is not truly random, but that's a topic for another discussion.)

That is exactly what I meant. I really hate that so I didn't choose clear research. Any to sway the random chance in my favour?

If your playing univ, choose cent eco as your free tech, then ind base, then ind econ, then plan nets, then ind auto. dont research any other tech, ever until you get IA. there are some maths behind that, but i dont really care about it after getting IA quickly

              • Tech chart: Powerpoint or PDF print one of these out, whichever you can access. then tack it up near your moniter, or memorise it or something. this is your faithful friend against all those bad guys out there...

I want to know the math. I was (years ago) going for cyberethics. I researched the prerequisites but it wasn't available, I had to choose some other crappy tech instead. That sucked. If they say that it's non blind then I WANT to be able to direct my research. And I don't think it's random either. The computer will cancel out the discovery techs if you had too many of them and force you to choose an explore tech if you were ingoring that area.

                      • Few questions about the game's mechanics.

In the beginning, people always get the Best armour and weapon available. Like if you have the partical impactor you won't build any more laser. Is that still true for the very high teched weapons? Like when the weapons becomes increasingly strong, are the best ones still economically efficient? Like do people actually build units with that string distruptor? I never had one because The game always ended earlier than that. Same with armour, do people actually build the stasis field? And with chassis, do people actually build the gravship?

And about the drone riots, you know how if you mind staple too much they become immune? If you stopped doing that for a while will they lose their immunity?

And how come when you use nukes funguns grows back everywhere?

Ill have some in BE2 assuming hercules can hang on for even 4 turns.probably i wont get it protoyped even mostly weapons are allocated as they are effective, impact jets are a common unit for much of the game for example. just use whatever works. ussualy if im attacking at all, i have built so much advantage it dosnt matter how cost effective it is anyway. which is what you should be trying to do! with focus on the ECON part of the game.

make like 100+ crawlers next game working forest tiles and i bet you 10000$ most of your questions will be answered.

                          • I don't think that there is a yes/no answer to that question. Best wapon/armour may seem the choice but can kill you if you can't build them fast enough - in that case "weaker" units may be preferable.

That is one of the things that make SMAC/X so good - there are no recipe on how to do it "right"

In late game against the AI you shouldn't have any problems and can build string disruptor/stasis choppers at your will - though, just build one and upgrade the rest

                            • That chart only tests every path to see if a tech will become available. Is there a way for me to know what order is needed to get a paticular tech with out being blocked out for a couple of turns?
