I got Server Busy this morning. When I came on in the afternoon, there were more Users on and everything was fine. Weird! You Learn Something New Every Day!

Save your doomsday speeches and drama, Spikie. Apparently you want us to spend our time not on discussing the site's future and working on it but on providing you with regular reports about what's going on.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

How slowly do you type, Solver, if you can't find the time to type two sentences?"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

And that would be useful how? Other than the obvious fact that not everyone that's going on should be discussed publicly, what good does a few sentence statement do? Saying that we're aware of issue X, such as these slowdowns, and are working on it, does relatively little good. Detailed updates that actually contain a bunch of new information can't be done in a few minutes.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

Okay, does anyone who works on Poly have any real experience with running services or websites? ****, at one of my jobs if we had system issues we had to provide the CIO of a massive company updates every 15 mins. The least you guys could do is provide weekly updates to the community."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Sorry Dan but I'm calling BS. You responded originally yes, but not since Asher's offer of help. And responding to that does not require technical expertise.
As to your second point I have to say that the same old tired lines about staff difficulties count for far less when you've got an offer of help you've ignored in this very thread!
And to Solver I call the same BS. Keeping people in the loop with what is going on need not take away from scarce technical expertise. We all know that Locutus and Gramphos are the only people with any real skill in that area and there are plenty of other staff members that can oblige on the comms side. As I've said repeatedly in this forum good comms is essential to keeping people engaged and actually generating potential volunteers. Staff shortages in the short term are unfortunate and can't he helped, and most of us appreciate how hard it must be. But I'm afraid I think that staff shortages that last years are just evidence of poor management and leadership.
Sorry if I appear shrill, but it's because I've been posting here for a long time and it's really sad to see the site go to the dogs like this without even a fight.

Frankly, I think the only people who can imagine that the admins and staff don't care and are sitting on their hands are the people that have the desire and determination to believe bad things about the site.
We do try and provide updates when it makes sense to do so. I admit that they may be too far between but your idea of a weekly update has little merit as well. What would it say? Like, root partition cleaned up, incremental backups have been automated and an issue with Apache spawning too many threads has been fixed. Something like that wouldn't even make much sense to most of the community. A generic "did some work to improve server-side performance" is too generic to be of much use.
And let me hazard a guess that the company you mention in your post was paying, and that the people providing these updates were paid employees as well. Since we have people doing this when they're available, it's generally a better allocation of resources to actually spend what time is available administering the server. Please remember that the only people who can really provide technical updates are the same ones that deal with the tech issues.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator
