It was an interesting read. Not that anyone seemed to bother.

I didn't read it because the interview was clearly a regression."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

Hmm the whole interview seemed more like a civrev commercial to me. I enjoyed the pics, tho - many of the games i played when they came out. And with Railroads/RRT it was obvious to me, which one i prefer - still.
Altough i respect Mr. Meier a whole lot, and also his non-black-white thinking, from his statements, even tho he tries to avoid to make that impression, one can deduct, that the game industry is a mass market by now. And they are trying to make it even ´massier´. Of course, they need to, its the need for commercial survival. But it would have been nice to read Mr. Meier admit that the times when a dedicated freak could pull off something like he did with Civ1, are over, pretty much, unfortunately in a way. One-man games can still be great (see Strategic Command I & II for example), but they wont become popular.
At the same time, the industry is turning away from the costumers that made it big and turns to ´casual´gamers instead. You have literally hundreds of Wing Commander clones, but show me one decent Elite-kind-of-game (or Starflight/Star Control for that matter) which serves the taste of someone, whose interest for space and sci-fi goes beyond the triggers and shields.
Of Mr. Meier´s remakes, which are not direct progressions (please dont get started on that word, folks) like the civ-series, Pirates! is IMHO the best and even there you can definetaly ´detect´how it is different from the original by being less serious, quicker and cuter - in short: more casual. That might appeal to the masses, but not to me (and many of those, who tend to take their games more seriuous than they maybe should). Railroads was on my harddrive for about one evening, that i spent shaking my head in disbelief. I guess thats why we wont see a remake of ´Silent Service´ (the only game i ever played with my dad) - how can you make a casual war-sub-sim ? (And of course there is Silent Hunter)
PS: So Lancer, what about the frenchman, the italian and the german in the bar ?

in one internview I read years ago, Mr. Meier said that he wanted to make Civ1 a game one could play and finnish in a course of afternoon. maybe with Civ:Rev he finally achieves that.
atleast I can't finnish Civ2 or Civ3 game in one evening. and if I can, I have to play like..... öö.... ... whats "joustenkustu" in english? My Words Are Backed With Bad Attitude And VETERAN KNIGHTS!

Civ4 can be played in 4-5 hours on normal speed setting, so if Civ:Rev is going to be shorter than that, I'm afraid for the franchise...Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.-Isaiah 41:10
