  • Some observations:

    1. The admin of OT have been subjective and inconsistent for years, it's nothing new. You have a better chance of being threatened by a mod if you criticize their policies than if you insult and degrade someone they don't like.

    2. They treat OT posters like children, and the OT regulars accept this. What self respecting person would allow him or herself to be "banned", and still want to return? And the censor-bot, or whatever it is, is more evidence of this. They call it "family friendly", but it really means "suitable for children". And that's OK, if you want to converse with children.

    3. As far as this "soul of Apolyton" stuff goes, OT is not Apolyton. Get over yourselves. There's lots going on on the site. Most of us wouldn't miss OT at all, if it were gone. It's fun for a while, but at its best, it's intellectual masturbation.

    4. There are some wonderful communities on Apolyton, which I value. And I thank the owners and volunteers for providing the opportunity. You are appreciated.

    • Can't be said enough. I'm thankful AAHZ and b etor and Will 9 have stayed around over the past year. They are entertaining in their own way. But if a bunch of people joined ply and tried to take over the entire OT atmosphere would just disappear.

the OT was much more fun when it was friendly, and had mao's coffee shop, imran's excellent adventures, and so on. it was much friendlier then, and noobs were welcomed with indifference (until they proved themselves being funny) rather than open contempt.

It's like people have reverted to being the whiny teenagers they were when they first discovered Poly.

          I blame the Bush administration.
No need to start throwing around ageist stereotypes.

This event should demonstrate that being a whiny loser knows no age classification.

As for the topic at hand, I am sorry to hear Asher is gone.

But this isn't about like or dislike. If he broke the rules, then he broke the rules. There are consequences for that. The owners are doing their very best to make this a pleasant place for all of us, and I support them for itl.

Wouldn't it be better to just open your own forums for selected members then? Start a country club of sorts.

What's wrong with some of you? I understand that old timers enjoy the back and forth that's been established over the years, but when it gets to the point that you guys are talking about...well...gimme a break already.

I Hate to break it to all of you, but none of you are as witty as you think.

It's funny you mention "atmosphere"...The OT has been (mostly) a gathering place for those who can't sleep at night unless they think they've sprung some clever remark on the internet community. And then have their cohorts pile on for the kill.

Although, most forums are like that.

Cohorts? I don't think so. I did a poll once on whether people thought they had regular allies, or just stood alone but sometimes with support from people who might agree on one issue but not another.

Hardly anyone reckoned they had regular allies.

yes, I would find the idea of allies in the OTF as rather comical myself.

There are some people you can count on for some topics, but they are topic related and not poster related. I have been pretty suprsed by some people I have gotten support from at certain times and amazed at folks who have opposed my point of view at others.

I think the place is pretty independent minded...and that is one of its strengths.

                          • I don't find the idea of OT allies that off base, you say yourself that there are topic related posters who agree, but I shouldn't have said cohorts.

The rest that I was referring to still stands.

Agreed. Along the way we've become bitter to newcomers. It's a shame and why Poly has stagnated. I do wonder how the CWAL folks (Fjorxc and his ilk) would have dealt with the current Off Topic 'welcoming'. While, admittedly, there was no welcome wagon for them, the 'hostile' engagement was in the guise of a story thread. So it worked as somewhat of a welcome.
