I don´t think merging will make this place look more lively. Besides merging will just confuse all but the hardcore posters I think...

      Forum Consolidation

Not so much of a series of mergers as there has been a consolidation:

I agree with Alex. I've been posting here (on-and-off) for all but a few months of Apolyton's existence, yet I've never been more than an occasional Civ player. I kept coming back because of the community... but over the last two or three years I don't think there's any doubt that the community on the off-topic forum has weakened considerably.

The off-topic forum might not be the "core" aspect of ACS (nor should it be) but it is the key to ensuring that visitors continue to come back regularly.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. It depends - strongly - on what kind of visitors you're talking about. What you say is true for a portion of visitors, but for other portions, what keeps them coming back might be regular Civ4 news, or strategy discussion, or this being the only active CtP community, or yet some other factor.

I'm not the oldest poster here, but I think that at nearly 6 years of posting I at least qualify as an old-timer. I can honestly say that OTF has not been a factor in me staying here for as long as I have, and I don't think I'm the single exception in this regard.

The OTF kept me coming when civ2 was old and civ3 not yet announced. The OTF kept me coming when civ3 was old and civ4 not yet announced. Most civ fans won't come here at all to check civ news after the game has been released. They come up to a few weeks after the release for the strategy tips etc. but after that there's no need to come here anymore. no news, no reason to visit. Unless you have a good community.

                        exactly.

and where else can you talk about the bizarre news stories of the day and the darwin award winners. People need to let off some steam.
