You guys should do scenario GotMs. Vanilla Civ can only be explored oh so much.

That's been suggested, but we wouldn't want to prevent those with only vanilla Civ 2 from joining in the fun.

I'm pretty sure that there would be very little people who are interested in Civ2 today that have simply vanilla Civ2...

I've still got 3792 posts there, which has fallen since the archiving or whatever they did, but still makes page 6 of the high posters list. curt has the most posts there though!

Well scenarios are pretty much moot without FW or MGE. With the "upgrade" to MGE I don't see why Scenario GOTMs can't be feasible.

Yeah I guess they didn't plan ahead when they made the first season. It was supposed to be a mini-series, but hey, I'm not complaining.

In related news, I happened to look up the Google PageRank for both CFC and Apolyton earlier today. The verdict:

                    apolyton.net: 5/10
                    www.civfanatics.com: 6/10

Primarily as "informationful non-forum web content". And "better" as both richer and more appealing.

For all that Apolyton has great forums, forums are not what the majority of casual civ-surfers want. People want clean pages with information on them. CFC has a ton of this. Their pre-release information page is still the #2 google hit for "Civ4". Their Civ3 content was as good if not better. The layout of their pages makes links more accessible, more meaningful, and thus more viewed. Forum links are an afterthought on the bottom of the page, and yet they still have more Civ3 threads (and probably active posters) than Apolyton.

Poly has no Civ3 information section. The strategy, screenshots, stories, downloads and 'links' links point at the (rather complex looking) directory. Four more links point at the (rather complex and pop-upfull) forums. The terms "Apolyton University", "Suggestions" and "HOF" are almost entirely without explanation or context. The FAQ is practically illegible.

The Civ4 section is better, in that it now has an "information" link, even if there isn't much behind it yet. I'm pretty sure the layout could be improved massively though. Get the ads out of the main text box, get the navigation links on the right back up nearer the top, and duplicate the section links (news, information, screenies) with them. Find a colour scheme that is more interesting than a lifetime spent in accountancy.

Also, and I realise that there is little that the ACS admin can do directly to drive user-content up, compare the CFC Civ3 files section with ACS Civ3 creation/files sections. CFC has 17000 threads to Poly's 18000 posts. ~320 files in the directory to CFC's ~2000. Back in the Civ2/CtP days, sites were all about how many mods they hosted. More content => more people => more user-made content => more people.

oh, that reminds me. I think the new modding wiki is an excellent idea.

I agree with all of this.

And people new to forums might go there instead of here because of it, which is a shame. Unfortunately the admins here are busy people and what time they have is largely spent on stuff for the forums, where we are already strong.

Several times in the recent past I've suggested to Mark and Dan that they need more minions to help them given their own responsibilties. Mark just says it's too much effort to get good staff. I'm not sure I agree with that - I think the long run benefits are probably rather high.

i hate to get into a sites comparison discussion but....

Their pre-release information page is still the #2 google hit for "Civ4".
                          does google ranking equals quality?

the most recent joke on the greek internet is that some people managed to get the public telecommunications company to be the first hit when you google the word "thieves" in greek

The Civ4 section is better, in that it now has an "information" link, even if there isn't much behind it yet.
i wont comment on the amount of content in the information section, but i suppose our two previews, two reviews, as well as the upcoming 11,000-words review by yin have gone unnoticed, in the same manner that have gone unnoticed our "print" and audio interviews...

I'm afraid I am not. However, there are plenty of able people around who have far too much time on their hands. I hope it goes well.

As an aside I remember I did offer to help once with the Civ3 forums when they were all messed up and not being maintained at all. I never even got a response.

yeah, well, 2 weeks later we barely had any volunteers
