What the USGA's rules officials have done to Dustin Johnson today is borderline criminal.

The possible infraction happened on the 5th hole, with no penalty called.
Then they confront Johnson on the 12th and tell him that after video review, there may be a penalty.
At that point, they ask his version of events, and he says he feels sure that he did not cause the ball to move.
...and they tell him they won't decide until after his round!
So he has to play the final 6 holes of a major, atop the leader board, but with that penalty hanging over his head.

MAKE A DAMNED CALL, YOU GUTLESS WONDERS.

The whole theory behind competitive golf is to have a level playing field.

Johnson had that hanging over his head, while no one else had to deal with uncertainty about their own score.

The head of officiating for the USGA should resign in disgrace.

If the head of officials doesn't resign, he should be fired.

Congrats to Dustin Johnson on finding a way to play through all the BS on making a ruling to win decisively. His 2nd shot on 18 was the stuff of legends - and a big FU to the rules officials. The birdie putt that followed was a sweet exclamation point.

YEAH that was borderline criminal. Saying they would review it after the round. (almost 4 hours later). What were they doing during that time. There wasn't that much to see. Yeah, the ball moved. Were they waiting for DJ to look at it and reconfirm what he said earlier. It would have taken 5 minutes to halt play, have him look at it and repeat what he said the first time.

They are lucky he won regardless.

I didn't hear. Did they ever have a final ruling or did they just blow it off since it didn't make a difference? (ah, just saw that they did indeed enforce a penalty. What a joke)

They did give him a penalty stroke after the round. Took longer than usual in the scorer's tent.

BTW, guys like Spieth, McIlroy and Fowler were tweeting about this as it happened -- all basically agreeing with us. McIlroy says he wouldn't have taken another shot until he had a final ruling.
