  • White Sox fans are tired of baseball this year You're our Tigers fan, and nobody cares about the Red Sox here.

I like the trade as a White Sox fan. We get something useful for Peavy; not what I'd like, but certainly the best reasonable return we could've got. A high ceiling starting OF for the next 6 years, even if he has a low floor, is worth the shot versus the other possibilities (largely potential utility guys). The low prospects sound interesting also; the White Sox have the ability to turn throwers into pitchers, so the 100mph guy seems like a good flier to me.

I think it's a good trade for the Red Sox, also; Peavy's very good (look at his SIERA and comparables, for example). Injury is the question with him. When healthy he was excellent this year. They traded away a sell-high prospect and a bunch of nothing prospects for a #2 SP who will give them a solid rotation for the playoffs. That's exactly what they need; and they get a sandwich pick if he leaves after next year (since they can make a qualifying offer).

    • Peavy should be solid for Boston. He has been dead solid this year (except those two starts where he tried to tough it out with a broken rib).

I assume trading for this SS is Peralta suspension insurance for the Tigers, yes?

      • That is the theory, and from what I've read the Tigers overpaid significantly given the guy they got is a glove-first-second-third shortstop who's currently on a hot streak with the bat but really isn't likely to be Omar Vizquel; at best Ozzie Guillen. But I suppose they have a relatively short window, so they need to move hard this year to stay in contention (and they have nobody behind Peralta).

        • It seems to be a good trade, though I do have some concerns about Mr. Glove. I suppose of all the teams in the league who could use a glove first, bat third player, it'd be the Tigers. Lots of big bats in the lineup currently, a gold glove caliber SS would be a great asset even if he doesn't get much above .250.

I really don't like giving away Avisail though. Mini-Miggy does seem to have a good future ahead of him. But there is a bit of a logjam in the outfield for the Tigers and need at SS. If Garcia and Iglesias are equally good, I'd much rather have Iglesias. Just depends on how these two end up.

This trade came together fairly quickly, and suddenly. So I don't think there are any doubts anymore about Peralta getting suspended and being done with the Tigers. Dombrowski moved on this trade because he knows more about the suspensions than we do. Better yet, even without the Biogenesis thing, Peralta is a free agent after this year, and getting Iglesias is a good way to both upgrade the defense and to shed salary for years to come.

Seems like a good trade for everyone involved. Just a question of how well Jose can hit.

          • Interesting stuff:

Find all the latest MLB news, live coverage, videos, highlights, stats, predictions, and results right here on NBC Sports.

The new names: The Mets’ Jordany Valdespin, the Phillies’ Antonio Bastardo and the Astros’ Sergio Escalona are all going to receive 50-game suspensions.

According to multiple reports, in addition to Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta, Everth Cabrera, Francisco Cervelli, Jesus Montero, Cesar Puello, Fautino De Los Santos, Fernando Martinez and Jordan Norberto have all accepted 50-game suspensions. That’s 12 players plus Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez.

Cleared, either completely or in terms of new discipline: Bartolo Colon, Yasmani Grandal, and Melky Cabrera, all who will get no additional discipline over what they have already served (each received 50-game suspensions last season). Finally, there have been no violations found for Gio Gonzalez of the Nationals or Danny Valencia of the Orioles. Each were named in the original Miami New Times report about Biogenesis, but there was not much in the way of evidence against them in the actual Biogenesis documents.
So, obviously, great news for Washington (though they are going backwards fast). Though HORRIBLE news for Texas as Cruz was one of their better hitters this year and they are fighting for a playoff spot. And bad news for Detroit as Peralta was having a great year - though they kind of anticipated this in their trade.

            • Heard the game with the Tigers-White Sox yesterday. Iglesias was throwing out everyone who batted a ball within a country mile of 3rd base and making it look like they were all Paul Konerko (some were). Doesn't sound like he needs to do much with his bat if he's this good a fielder at 3B assuming it carries over to SS...

                • So apparently this Iglesias guy that the Red Sox traded to the Tigers is amazing:

I’m a big fan of games that summarize entire skillsets. To pick one example, on May 25, 2012, Adam Dunn DH’d and went 1-for-4 with a homer, a walk, and three strikeouts. To pick another example…

Only 10 games for Iglesias, but:
In games without Iglesias, Tigers pitchers have allowed a .305 BABIP. In games with Iglesias, Tigers pitchers have allowed a .285 BABIP. A BABIP of .305 would be baseball’s fifth-worst. A BABIP of .285 would be baseball’s fourth-best.
That's insane! And especially needed on the Tigers infield, which isn't all that good defensively.

And then y'all (Texas that is) traded him for little gain (1.5 years of Koji Uehara) .

But yeah, he is really good defensively (useless with a bat, but that's okay).

I don't recall you saying anything at all at the time of the trade, so this is just more hindsight that may or may not have any relevance. Typical.

                          • In this year's fantasy draft, not about a trade made in past years. You should be sorry. Thanks.

                            • To be fair, you're not posting in the fantasy thread, but the real life thread... but I'd also expect Imran to know how many rounds the real life baseball draft has (40).

                              • To be fair, he's just running his mouth at me, yet again. To be fair again, I expected no backing from any of you. I'm really really sorry that I polluted this thread.
Kind of like you, already polluting the Draft thread.
