Sloww, seriously? Did you read the rest of that? I saw it as a headline next to the mock draft you posted from NFL.com last night. He was released to re-sign him for less. That's what the headline said last night. Something along the lines of "Source: Packers release Hawk; expect to resign"

Hawk's agent, Mike McCartney, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Thursday morning that the two sides are "putting the finishing touches" on a deal that will bring Hawk back to Green Bay one day after the team released him.

Hawk, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft, was scheduled to earn $10 million in 2011, and the team hoped to bring him back at a reduced salary. Packers general manager Ted Thompson said Wednesday that the business side of the game drove the decision to release Hawk and he was hopeful Hawk would return.
You do know AJ Hawk is NOT a starter, right? You do know Nick Barnett and Brandon Chillar start over him, right? Not to mention Desmond Bishop. Who the hell pays $10 Million to a backup ILB?

          • Oh, **** off, Al. You do know he was a Captain during the playoffs? I don't care all that much, so let's give you something else to argue about with me.

            • Well this is what I'm getting...

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel confirms that AJ Hawk's re-signing "does not bode well" for Nick Barnett's future with the Packers.
Hawk's deal is expected to be worth $30-35 million over five years, and Barnett is due $6M in 2011, including salary and bonuses. Desmond Bishop and Hawk will be locked in as starters with Brandon Chillar returning as the top backup. Barnett can pretty safely expect his release later this offseason.
So they're keeping AJ Hawk and possibly releasing Barnett.

That's the surprising LB move, Sloww.

AJ You can get what you want from several teams....The Packers don't like to Pay.
You have earned a Big salary as a premier player and you won't have alot of years to claim that kind of money.

It's always kinda stupid to see a team dump a guy only to get him back for less. What's the big deal about staying on the team and just restructuring the current deal to be where the new one would be. @#$% geniuses I guess.

With AJ's deal being done know we have a secure MLB core. I think we can forget about resigning cullen jenkins. He wants to get paid. I only got one question for ted. Why did you not cut justin harrel? I mean come on man.

How about a trade between the Bears and the Packers. Lovie for AJ.

                • What is your opinion? That AJ Hawk should get paid $10 million next year instead of $30-35 million over 5 years? Apparently Ted Thompson and the Green Bay Packers organization don't think so and their opinion matters more than yours or some random fans.

Whatever, Sloww. Argue all you want.

                  • And Vick is worth at least THREE AJ Hawks. Are you serious, Sloww?

AJ Hawk was a consensus draft bust and buried on the GB depth chart (being used only situationally and on special teams) until Nick Barnett and Brandon Chillar got hurt thrusting Hawk into the starting lineup. Hawk is a middling LB at best and probably only had the relative success he had this season due to the rest of the pieces of that defense being around him. He is not a high first round talent by any stretch of the imagination.

                        1) most of the time that you think I'm 'arguing' with you, I'm not. That's in your head.
                        2) this is a forum. You get offended that I post opinions different than yours and back mine up with something and show why your opinion is wrong?

                        • Ernie Sims was taken a few picks after AJ Hawk in that draft class. Here's how they stack up after 5 full seasons (AJ Hawk having had the benefit of playing with better quality of players around him than Sims did on the Lions and last year with the Eagles D that was hardly great):

                          Hawk:
                          80 games, 363 tackles, 144 assists, 9 sacks, 8 INTs, 3 forced fumbles

                          Sims:
                          74 games, 330 tackles, 146 assists, 4.5 sacks, 1 INT, 5 forced fumbles

Sims was traded to the Eagles for a 5th round draft pick and is scheduled to make $900,000 this year. You seriously think that 4.5 more sacks and 7 interceptions over 5 WHOLE SEASONS!!!! warrants AJ Hawk to receive over 10x the compensation that Sims gets?!

For him to make $6-7 mil a year would be pretty solid for a player of Hawk's talent.
