  • A 3-technique DT and the entire OL are the biggest needs IMO. Obviously, areas like WR and DB can be improved, but I'm a big believer that winning in the trenches makes everyone else more effective.

When I recover from my fainting spell over this comment, I'll tell you how it would be a good idea to draft now and have the rookie standing on the sideline with Garrett as a coach and Kitna standing next to the rookie for a couple of years, pointing out the nuances of pro ball. They could wait a round and try to get Andy Dalton out of TCU and I'd be fine with that.
We need OL and Safety, although I'd advocate a CB and move a CB to Safety if need be.

Yeah but a 9th overall QB won't sit on the sidelines learning for a few years. That's what later guys do. 9th overalls get paid too much to have them riding the bench.

        • Will the rookie wage scale (if there is one) apply to this year's draft? If it does that could changes things dramatically. Would be less of a risk for the Panthers to take Newton first.

          • A couple = 2
            A few = 3-5

You're arguing with yourself again, Al. Two years is not excessive, if it's thought he can start 10 years.

There is no way a 9th overall QB pick will be riding pine for 2 years. And that would mean you get rid of Romo while he's still good? Huh?

The Cowboys would screw themselves to pay a QB top-10 pick money and have him sit on the bench for 2 years. I know Philip Rivers was the exception to this but it was extraordinary circumstances and the Chargers by moving DOWN to get Rivers and getting another 1st round pick the next year were in a position where they could afford to ride Brees for 2 years with Rivers on the bench.

The Cowboys have no need for a QB. It would be the shock of the draft if they drafted Newton at #9.

              • If Jerry Jones makes a move for a QB, he'll probably try to get Ryan Mallett at the top of the 2nd round. Jerry Jones sure loves his Razorbacks.

It would still be stupid, though. Romo is a Pro Bowl QB and Jon Kitna showed he is a more than adequate backup. The Cowgirls need to worry about other positions before they worry about the future of the QB position.

                  A) They might not ride the pine in your little world, but not everyone lives there.
                  B) I didn't say Romo was going anywhere. Back "in the good old days", when teams had a plan for both the present and future, it wasn't uncommon at all to have a starter with an older QB standing next to a young guy and advising.
                  C) Which makes Rivers less of an exception than exists in, yes again, your world.
                  D) I don't particularly want them to draft Newton, if they draft a QB at all. I said that, but you were already too busy formulating an argument in your mind to pay attention to what I said.

Probably. RB is less risky of a position from a draft bust perspective.

I was hoping that the Giants would get Ingram but Washington or Miami (maybe even Dallas) will probably snag him before the Giants' pick.

Still, it's interesting to note how the 18 teams drafting ahead of NYG pretty much have solid players at the RB position:

                      1 Carolina Panthers
                      2 Denver Broncos
                      3 Buffalo Bills
                      4 Cincinnati Bengals
                      5 Arizona Cardinals
                      6 Cleveland Browns
                      7 San Francisco 49ers
                      8 Tennessee Titans
                      9 Dallas Cowboys
                      10 Washington Redskins
                      11 Houston Texans
                      12 Minnesota Vikings
                      13 Detroit Lions
                      14 St. Louis Rams
                      15 Miami Dolphins
                      16 Jacksonville Jaguars
                      17 New England Patriots
                      18 San Diego Chargers
Ingram could fall far if Washington or Miami doesn't pull the trigger. The other 16 teams on that list have star players at the RB position. Interesting that some of the league's worst teams (obviously the Pats are up there from a trade) are either strong at RB or have recent high-draft pick players at the position. That's a little unexpected.
