  • Philosophical question for my fellow football fans here.

Assume your defense has proven to be utterly useless, giving up points every single possession, and utterly incapable of forcing a turnover. Why would you not onside kick at every opportunity, given that it doesn't matter if the opposition gets the ball at their 25 or your 40, as they're gonna get 7 anyway?

      • Think you could back me up when I explain that to RichRod?

        • Absolutely. The logic of it is unassailable.

Not so sure about the assumption; that's your dept.

          • Oregon up 43-32 at the end of the 3rd. The Ducks let USC take the lead again at the start of the half thanks to an interception and a huge special teams blunder on a punt return. But now they've scored 14 unanswered, and the sideline report is that USC's defense is totally gassed.

            • How about this philosophical question:

Your team is down by less than a field goal and your offense has the ball on the 19 yard line with mere seconds to go. Do you kick the field goal for a win, or do you throw a pass into the end zone for a touchdown?

If you picked the latter, you're Brian Kelly, and Notre Dame just lost to Tulsa thanks to an interception.

              • 5-7, here we come.

Seriously, JR, the Illini are going to pound us.

I sincerely hope the NCAA drops the hammer on RichRod; it'll make it that more likely the AD will fire his ass.

Penn State has scored over 41 points, with a walk-on freshman quarterback in his first start.

Depends on the opponent. If it's somebody who would have trouble going 80 yards against air, your defense doesn't necessarily have to do anything to stop them. Against a competent offense, though, I tend to agree with you.

                    • With respect to Boris's Irish comment... Maybe their kicker sucks.

I was reading on ESPN how Oregon's offense could be susceptible to a defense that can audible quickly. An advantage that Oregon is having over opponents is that they line up so quickly that defenses just come out in the same set play after play which means QB Darren Thomas is looking at the same thing every play which is an obvious advantage for him. I don't know. Just what I was reading on ESPN.

Nobody knew which of us to pin the #1 jinx on this week. Looks like it's going to be broken either way. Glad to have a quasi-off week next week before UGA, then a true off week before going to Tuscaloosa. Don't like anything about having to play the SECCG this year, if we win out. Nothing to win and everything to lose.

                              • To be fair, Guy, as usual, you're being too harsh on Michigan.

                                Penn State possesions:
                                Touchdown
                                Touchdown
                                Punt (3 and out)
                                Touchdown
                                Touchdown
                                Field Goal
                                Touchdown
                                Punt
                                Field Goal

See, it's not 7 every possession. They forced two punts!
