Sweden chased Mason after 3 pretty easy goals yesterday so I'm not sure even he's an asset. Both teams looked pretty uninspired though apart from a few players.

WC, does it mean World Cup or World Championship?

Hockey World Cup means something, World Championship is like a European midget tournament.

World Cup is the old Canada Cup? They're still doing that?

It's not a regular thing, but yes.

Canada is the defending champion (2004). This way we're always the World Cup champion, as it doesn't happen anymore.

Unlike its International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF)-sanctioned counterpart, the annual World Ice Hockey Championships, the World Cup of Hockey is organized by the National Hockey League (NHL). As such, the games are played under NHL rules and not those of the IIHF. The World Cup of Hockey also occurs outside of the hockey season, allowing for all the best players in the world to be available, unlike the World Championships, which overlaps with the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Hey I didn't say he was great-- he was a #1 though and had muddling to good numbers-- Dubnyk has some pretty awful numbers and Johnson hardly played.

None of the three would rank in the top 15 goalies in the league on any list

Its actually a little sad how 3rd tier the Canadian team is--- hell I would have thought a few more of the almost-Olympians might have wanted a kick at this

Czech - Canada 3:1 after two periods.
              Way to go Avangard Omsk!
(both Jagr and Klepish who scored in the 2nd period are players of my home city team ).

Bullsh!t. All national leagues have a break during the WC (no UEFA games either).

                  Referees
                  My congrats to Czechs anyway.

If we beat Finland tonight (that will be our 25th victory in a row at WC and a new world record (USSR holds previous record of 24 wins), then welcome to the Russia-Canada 1/4th again. Ironic, isn't it?

And yet, still no one cares.

Russia is the only country that even sends a 1st string team to this tournament. The wins are meaningless to anyone who understands hockey.

                      Who? Canada?
Canada has finished fourth in its group.

                        Yup

I have spent the last two lunches with avid hockey fans. We discussed the two NHL series at length . The worlds did not even arise as a topic.

Based on the teams the respective teams sent, Russia should be embarrassed if this is anything other than a clear win for them.

                          Russia - Finland.
                          What a start!
You guys are dumb, if you think no one cares. Look at the first period. It's a real warfare, despite the looser of this game will get a weaker opponent in 1/4th.

                            Look at the standings.

Do you honestly think the current standings correspond to how good a hockey country is?

That's because Russians are patriots, while Canucks are lazy, selfish and greedy bastards who don't want to play for their banner.
