Why does anyone do trades they cannot do? Talk ti the freaking player before you do a deal !!!

The reports are leaking out of one side or the other, or an agent's office.

It would be good if it could be clamped down on.

A team leaking this could be viewed as tampering. There are severe sanctions for tampering. The agents? Not so much. Maybe the NHLPA needs to look at tighter guidelines for accreditation.

I'm not sure he didn't want to be re-signed in Edmonton.

The rivalry and freindship with Hemsky is the only reason I can come up with for Calgary being on his list. Why else do you name a team that should be in the playoffs?

Or maybe he just hated being taxed at a low rate? Didn't feel like home?

Calgary plays a defensive system with a very active coach with an iron fist. I'd imagine a lot of "skill" Euros (particularly those with questionable heart and a habit of being a healthy scratch) would not enjoy such a team.

TSN seems to think the NTC didn't scuttle the deal, but it was held up from Calgary's end. Rumours about another team jockeying to land Jokinen...

                THis story
It is expected that Olli Jokinen will be in the Calgary Flames' lineup when they play tonight in Calgary against the Philadelphia Flyers. Brandon Prust may also be in the lineup but it could be Brian McGrattan instead.

In any case, it is clear that the deal that looked on Sunday night as though it was agreed to - Jokinen and Prust to the New York Rangers in exchange for Chris Higgins and Alex Kotalik - is not going to happen over the course of today.

It's obviously possible the deal may not get done at all, but the mere fact that one or both players are in the Flames' lineup tonight doesn't mean for certain it won't get done either.

Sources tell TSN that while the Rangers thought they had the deal basically agreed to on Sunday night, the Flames weren't ready to pull the trigger, in part, because they felt they needed Jokinen in the lineup tonight against Philadelphia in Calgary. There are reports that Kotalik isn't prepared to waive his no-trade clause to go to Calgary but the indication is the Rangers were fully able and prepared to do this deal, but Calgary backed away at the last moment.

It is unusual, to say the least, to play players who are supposed to be part of a trade - an injury could scuttle the whole thing - but it's quite possible that's exactly what the Flames are doing and that the deal could still be resurrected after the game.

We should know more after tonight's Calgary-Philadelphia game
He hasn't tweeted anything more. Interesting times!

If that's true, it lends more credence to the idea that Kotalik's stay will be temporary.

He wants Jokinen in the lineup tonight instead of Kotalik? Doesn't make much sense if you're trading for the player and intend to keep him. I don't think he thinks much of Kotalik.

Its weird-- If you think you 'need Ollie in the lineup" then why in the world would you be trading him. All the Leafs guys should be here by now and ready to play . .. So I am trying to figure out what is really going on--

Kotalik's no trade clause should not be a big deal-- he says yes or no and you move on--So I am wondering if there is another deal in the hopper somewhere. Time will tell

Back to the Phaneuf trade. I think it is clear that the Flames are a better team for this year with that deal than they are without it. The Flames other d-men can absorb Phaneif's minutes and, heck, White was a 23 minute guy for TO.

Long range, the Flames don't get that much but at the same time, you have to consider-- its not what you get now for the 6.5 million man that is the complete part of the package. The other thing is whatever new people you can buy with that cash.

I find the cap world to be interesting. You don't just ask if a player is good, its whether they are good enough to justify the cap hit. If you dump a $4 million player for little return but then are able to sign a $4 million player as a FA that you think is a better player, I have a hard time seeing how you lost.

It used to be that long term contract with a star was a great benefit since it had no impact on your ability to chase free agents. But in a cap world every contract is both an asset and a liability.

Thinking more on it, I don't mind the long range on this trade, yet, since we don't know what it will be. It can only be truly assessed when you consdier what else the Flames get for the 6.5 million space. Next year the Flames should still have Hagman, but what else do they buy

                      Newest rumours:

Flames want Kotalik and Callahan, instead of Kotalik and Higgins.

Others say Calgary is in talks with Dallas re: Richards...not sure if I buy that. Sutter was in Dallas yesterday, and the Stars owner is in financial trouble and Richards gets paid a lot...

How about Callahan and Higgins? The more I read up on Kotalik, the less like the guy

Richards? That would take some doing unless they really just want to dump the salary (in which case they don't want Jokinen would they? ) I just don't know what the Flames can give up to attract Dallas. Whats your source in the Richards rumour?

Jokinen is a UFA, which would be attractive to Dallas. Even if they re-sign him, he'll make far less.

The rumour mill had Langkow, Jokinen, and one of Boyd/Moss going for Richards.

Eklund had mentioned the Richards thing, which is why it is less than credible.

The Flames should do that trade in a second. The Flames gave up a quality d man for a quantity of decent top 9 guys. This trade would turn some quantity back into a quality forward. Langkow would be another nice cap hit to move onward.

I will admit that I do find all this trade talk to be interesting. Its made me think and I realized that the number of Flames I would be very reluctant to trade would be very short

Very Reluctant-- Iggy, Bourque, Giordano, Boumeester, Kipper

I would also be reluctant to part withy some of their cheap depth d-men--- good cheap defenceman that can play fairly steadily is a pretty valuable thing so I wouldn't toss them away easily

Oh and I saw the lines the calgary Sun posted for tonights game. I'm going from memory but I believe it was

                                Boyd-Stajan-Iginla
                                Hagman-Langkow -Bourque
                                Glencross-Jokinen*- forget(Lundemark)
                                Nystrom-Myers-Prust

err--just saw a tsn story confirming the Iggy line and the Nystron line as the way thay practiced today but today in practice Ollie was centring Hagman and Lundemark which would leave Bourque with Langkow and Gencross. But it was only a game-day skate so it probably means very little.

OH and White will pair with Regehr-- so that means J-Bo with Giordano and Pardy-Sarich

                                Tonight should be interesting!!
