Sportsnet is reporting that the holdup is Kotalik has a limited NTC. Calgary is one of teams he has specified not going to.

I'm not sure I would be that upset/bothered if this one falls through. I haven't been a big Kotalik fan in the past

Kotalik is about as far as you can get from a "Sutter" player. To me that's what made it clear that he was only part of a bigger trade Sutter wanted to play.

Perhaps the holdup is that Calgary is just going to be acting like an intermediary, and he'd be fairly immediately traded to another team (Atlanta...). Kotalik may not be buying the word of the GMs involved here.

There are some NTCs that work that way.

The player gives management a list of teams he does not want to be traded to. The contract specifies how many teams can be on the list.

Kaberle has a special NTC that is going to become common, I think.

If his team misses the playoffs he can be traded during the summer.

Kotalik’s limited no-trade clause lists three teams he can not be traded to without his permission and Calgary is one of them. The deal is not expected to be completed until late Monday morning at the earliest.

The problem can be the effect on the player who ends up not moving.

Being traded can have a significant effect phsychologically, and then to end up not moving. The team to be traded from can end up with a really large problem.

It's likely due to him being in Edmonton last year and a freindship with Hemsky.

If anything it may spur him again. He was awesome in his first 10 games as a Flame, then he stopped trying. Now he has more motivation.

Yeah, he has already been traded twice, so the blow would be lessened. Maybe a kick in the pants. Never know though.

Cogliano was pretty badly affected at the time of the near Heatley trade. His season has not shown that he has recovered.

Although, if I recall correctly, Cogliano went to the Halloween party as Heatly, and Penner went as Santa, with No Trade printed as his name a la a jersey.

The universal reaction to all Flames fans I've read/heard from to the Kotalik trade was something along the lines of "WHYYYYYYY" or "BLECCH!!!".
