  • And we can thank the money grubbing old men who run the bowl system for that. It's not done for ANY OTHER reason except for the money the bowls generate.

And again, since the bowls are in decline, a system that would bring them into playoff system and make them meaningful again... Now is the time to bring in a playoff system.

I remember when I was younger, New Years Day was non stop football. This New Years, I caught a little bit of a few games... the rest were kind of meaningless and held little interest. That's what The BCS has done to college football.

    • Uhhh... isn't that because there are a lot of great games a few days after January 1? So instead of jam packing a bunch of great bowls, they are more spread out, so you may be able to catch all of them?

That's the whole point... Thanks to the BCS, none of the games on New Years Day mean anything anymore unless you went to that school. It used to be that many of them would have an impact on the National Championship, and they were the better games. Now, the important games are after NYD... and there aren't a "lot of them" just a few.

There is no real need to watch the traditional big bowl games on New Years Day. So sure, you can watch more, but nobody really wants to... as proved by the heavily declining ratings.

I really don't see the merit of the complaint.

Secondly, its not entirely true that New Years Day games don't mean anything anymore because the Rose and another BCS Bowl (Orange?) play on the 1st. As well as, IIRC, the Outback Bowl and Peach Bowl, as well as others. Those are all games with good competition.

          • It was better when it was Rose, Cotton, Orange and Sugar Bowl on New Year's day.
Now, there have been all these less relevant games, where two 6-5 teams go at it.
The Folger's Coffee Bowl, or whatever.

            • For instance, last season on New Year's Day, you could have watched the Outback Bowl between Iowa and South Carolina at 11 AM. Then when it started to get boring (as Iowa was winning big), you could at 1 PM watch either the Capital One (Georgia vs. Michigan St) or Gator Bowl (Nebraska vs. Clemson) - both very good games. Then at 4:30, you had the Rose (USC vs. Penn State) and then at 8 the Orange (Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati) and then you still had the Cotton (Mississippi vs. Texas Tech) and Sugar (Utah vs. Alabama) on the 2nd, Fiesta (Texas vs. Ohio State - amazing Bowl Game, btw) on the 5th, and the National Championship (Florida vs. Oklahoma) on the 8th.

How is that not better than jamming all those games into one day?

              • Gee... what a great list of so what games. The only games of interest to me were the Rose Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl and the National Championship Game. The rest, ho hum. And the ratings support that others thought the same. New Year Day bowl game ratings were at an all time low. It seems less and less people are caring. Sure, the National Championship game will draw big attention, and maybe a few other select premium matchups, but the ratings are all the proof you need that less people are watching overall. A bad situation for College Football.

In the good ole days, it was a matter of deciding which New Years Day Football party I would go to... Lately, nobody is bothering to even have the parties.

EDIT - I stand corrected. I just reviewed the ratings, and many of the games had their first up tick this year in the ratings... the first time since the start of the BCS series. However, even with stronger ratings, most games are still below the pre BCS ratings and the Orange Bowl produced the lowest rating ever for a BCS game.

                • For the life of me, I can't see how a college football fan wouldn't care about the Sugar Bowl matchup last year.

Because the BCS made it not matter as much. Who cares if Utah wins, it doesn't determine anything in the official record, and the pollsters didn't even attempt to rectify it.

Is this is a joke post? Because it is a highly intriguing matchup between an undefeated "mid-major" and a very good Alabama team.

So you don't watch good matchups if you don't think it won't have an impact on the 'national championship' picture? Surreal.

I don't watch a farce and call it sport. I don't watch something I know is wrong and call it entertaining (in college football at least).

Then why are you watching every week? Unless you aren't and are just stirring up trouble .

I don't watch games that I think will be bad and if I make the mistake I have options. What happened to Utah was a disgrace and watching it would have been passive support of ****ty system that results in ****ty outcomes.
