And Martinez comes back with a 2 run blast!

And the Yanks sweep the BoSox in a 4 game series. The Yankees are looking reallly tough right now, like the team that people though they'd be at the beginning of this season. Everything is coming together... and that's with an A-Rod that is, at best, 75% healthy.

That was beautiful. Especially the late-inning comeback last night. Perfect.

The Yanks are not as good as they look right now, though. Mitre is still the 5th starter (Gaudin will probably take that spot soon, but while I like the acquisition and all, he's not very good either). Pettitte's on a roll and is getting some luck (hard-hit liners right at people), and that won't last. Joba's innings limit is looming, so they will have to skip him a few times, which means starts by lesser pitchers. This is why a 6.5 game lead is so nice - because they're gonna need it.

I'm going to give a cautious cheer to this news:
White Sox aquire Alex Rios via waivers

Assuming he reverts to form, this is a great deal. But, if he's hurt or something else is causing him to underperform that Toronto didn't disclose, this could be a problem.

Hard to say where he fits in this year...

                    OF = Quentin, Pods, Dye
                    1B/DH = Konerko, Thome

He's a better OF defender than any of those 3. Do they bench Pods, their acknowledge sparkplug? Do they sit Quentin until he's actually fit? Just when he's finally starting to hit...?

But I agree, if Rios and Peavy return healthy in 2010, this could be a pretty damn good team.

They bench Pods, and give the others frequent rests. You actually don't quite have it right:

                      OF: Quentin, Pods, Dye, Rios
                      1B: Kotsay, Konerko
                      DH: Thome, (anyone)

With a bit over 50 games left, I bet Pods starts about 30 of them.
Quentin: 35-40 games plus some DH
                      Rios: 45 games
Dye: 35-40 games in RF plus some DH
Pods: 30 games (in LF or CF, Rios moves to RF, or at DH)
Konerko: 30 games at 1B plus 15 at DH
                      Thome: 30 games at DH
                      Kotsay: 20 games at 1B

It'll be distributed approximately like that for the rest of the season, depending on how the playoff hunt goes.

                        Eh, forgot about Kotsay.

Do you really think they'll sit Thome 20 out of 50 games? I don't see that happening.

I think they might, but it depends on the playoff hunt. If it's down to the wire they won't. If they are comfortably ahead, they'll sit him more. They're sitting him and AJ way more than I thought either would be sat as it is, and that's before you add a very nice bat who needs lots of starts.

Kotsay is definitely not good to forget about He's a decent hitter, great off the bench, and very good defensively at first (way more range than Paulie, even if Paulie is great with the glove while standing still). I definitely don't mind that trade.
