  • I don't like this trade for the Cowboys. I'd love it for some other teams.

Once a team gets talented enough, they're no longer searching for talent. They're searching for cost-effective talent. The Cowboys have plenty of talent, and they're about to come up against the cap, hard. It's impossible to keep that many superstars together.

Primarily, I'm thinking that DeMarcus Ware's second contract negotiations are looming. He is the best linebacker in the league, period. He is going to want an absurd sum of money, and he's going to be worth it. Should the Cowboys try to keep Owens, Williams, Ware, and their secondary together, they're in for a gigantic crunch.

Are you sure? I thought it was the last pick in the draft.

        • Everything has been targeted at the first year of the new stadium. If they don't win it all either this year (increasingly unlikely) or next, they'll just fire Wade, promote Jason Garrett and remake the team again.

And most of their overpriced talent has been paid for, hasn't it?

BTW, I agree that adding Roy Williams to the mix -- in an area of team strength -- is a very odd move. Kudos to Detroit for moving him.

          • The last pick in the draft is usually a compensatory pick (a sometimes 7th round pick that compensates for losing a RFA or whatnot). It is not generally the superbowl winning team's 7th rounder.

For example, this year's Mr. Irrelevant:
[q="http://www.nfl.com/draft/tracker#dt-tab-set-1:dt-by-round/round-7"]45 (252) St. Louis Rams (Compensatory selection) Vobora, David OLB 6'1" 236 Idaho[/q]

            • Detroit is shooting for the #1 overall pick...

Lions placed Jon Kitna on injured reserve with a back injury, ending his tumultous three-year run in Detroit.

Kitna says he could return this season, so he could work out an injury settlement with the team. It's questionable whether anyone else will want him. Dan Orlovsky and Drew Stanton will finish off the year for Detroit.

              • Detroit won't have to try very hard to get it ... I seriously see a 1-15 season as a strong possibility (even WITH Kitna + Williams).

They agreed to a 5 year extension before the trade went down.

The Williams trade means that Owens is out the door at the end of the year.

No, it means Owens won't be double-teamed every down.

These aren't mutually exclusive. But I find the former more likely than the latter.

If you get a good bump on Williams, he'll have trouble getting separation.

                              • Why would the Cowboys get rid of Owens. It seems like he's been pretty well behaved while in Dallas... and you can't argue with the production.
