Euro 2008 a lead up to the world cup?

Following on from Maq's reply ...

It's better than the World Cup as far as the density of good teams go - there are only 16 instead of 32 in the World Cup finals. Apart from the hosts, who not only get free entry but get seeded in their groups as well (a terrible thing IMO), all the teams are good. Chuck in Brazil and Argentina instead of Austria and Switzerland (joint hosts) and it would be a helluva contest.

Though that might be harsh on the Ivory Coast and a few other decent sides from Africa plus probably Mexico.

The World Cup would be much better if they stopped giving Asian teams so many places. The African teams are usually good enough, they play differently but they're quite decent - Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Egypt, and the like. South Africa used to be good. Asian teams, though, still suck badly, one spot would be enough... fortunately, Australia is now part of the Asian federation, which means that it'll qualify and there'll be one less crap team like Iran, Saudi Arabia or Korea.
