  • I do think though, that if you are Texas, you have to take a chance on a young pitcher (or two), because obviously you can't trade for or buy established pitchers worth a damn.

    • Pitchers, much more than hitters, are vulnerable to a 'hard to figure out' first year or two, then followed by people figuring them out as they see them more. This mostly affects pitchers with 'interesting' deliveries (think Japanese pitchers, for example), but can affect a lot of pitchers ultimately. This is why a lot of pitchers have an amazing first half, followed by weaker second half, then totally fall off the radar the next year. Some recover - Daisuke, for example, seems to have - but some just aren't good enough pitchers to recover.

Hitters occasionally have this factor, but much, much less frequently (because there is less to disguise in hitting). It usually happens faster when they do (for example, the pitchers realize after even just a few at bats - if not by viewing spring training at bats - that a particular hitter has a weakness, say inside pitches, and throws at that more; but a good hitter can recover from such a weakness and turn it into a strength, so it's less a factor.

Agreed. It's all the more difficult for Texas, given their hitters' park. It's sorta like Coors Light. Well, except that Coors Light is utter crap, whereas Texas' stadium is quite nice, just unfriendly to pitchers. But anyway...

That's the biggest complaint. If I had the inclination, I'd come up with a long list of young minor leaguers the Rangers traded off.

          • I wonder... are Texas' minor league parks also hitters parks? If so, could their pitching prospects look worse than they really are? You'd think the Texas front office would realize it, but if they don't (and other teams do), you would see Texas prospects doing markedly better for other teams... oh.

            • It appears that A-Rod has decided in the absense of Wang, he'll take the Yankees on his back.

The amazing thing to me is that right now A-Rod is having a better year than he did in his MVP season last year. He's been injured, but he's got a .417 OBP and a .635 SLG for a OPS+ of 182 (his OBP and SLG were better last year, but I guess the rest of the league was better as well).

Really is there any doubt this man is the best player in baseball?

              • I would presume TX just has lousy pitching scouts...

                    But he's a choker!111!!! LOL!

He's ****ing amazing. The team is rolling ever since he (and then Posada, who is also awesome) came off the DL. Hopefully Matsui doesn't have to go on the DL...

That said, w/o Wang, the Yanks are in serious trouble. Even if they make the playoffs, they've lost their ace (who was, admittedly, awful in the ALDS last year). He's the one guy in that rotation who consistantly pitches into the 7th (I think he averages 6 2/3 IP/start) and is the best bet for a sub-4 era.

The offense can cover up the pitching flaws for now, playing weak teams. Against the better teams, though, not so much. At this point, the Yankees now need the following things to happen:

Solid pitching from Pettitte, Mussina, Rasner and Joba + decent spot starts from random guys like Giese + triumphant returns by Kennedy and/or Hughes.

                    Tall order.

                        • Is Kei Igawa still in AAA? Bring him back and see all your pitching concerns suddenly disappear.

                          • Cute. But you forget about Sir Sidney Ponson. Phear him.

Well, Joba did his job today. The Padres suck, and the Yankees did what they should do to ****ty teams.

Like I said earlier, wait until the warm weather. Well it's finally come. The Tigers have just found their stride. They've picked up 5 games on the White Sox in about 1 week. I'll still take Detroit to win the central.
