    One final time for this:

Elope with me, Miss Private, and we’ll sail around the world
I will be your Ferdinand and you my wayward girl
How many nights of talking in hotel rooms can you take?
How many nights of limping around on pagan holidays?
Oh, elope with me in private and we’ll set something ablaze
A trail for the devil to erase

San Francisco’s calling us, the Giants and Mets will play
Piazza, New York catcher, are you straight or are you gay?
We hung about the stadium, we’ve got no place to stay
We hung about the Tenderloin and tenderly you tell
About the saddest book you ever read, it always makes you cry
The statue’s crying too and well he may

I love you, I’ve a drowning grip on your adoring face
I love you, my responsibility has found a place beside you
And strong warnings in the guise of gentle words
Come wave upon me from the wider family net absurd
“You’ll take care of her, I know it, you will do a better job”
Maybe, but not what she deserves

Elope with me, Miss Private, and we’ll drink ourselves awake
We’ll taste the coffee houses and award certificates
A privy seal to keep the feel of 1960 style
We’ll comment on the decor and we’ll help the passer by
And at dusk when work is over we’ll continue the debate
In a borrowed bedroom virginal and spare

The catcher hits for .318 and catches every day
The pitcher puts religion first and rests on holidays
He goes into cathedrals and lies prostrate on the floor
He knows the drink affects his speed, he’s praying for
    a doorway
Back into the life he wants and the confession of the bench
Life outside the diamond is a wrench

I wish that you were here with me to pass the dull weekend
I know it wouldn’t come to love, my heroine pretend
A lady stepping from the songs we love until this day
You’d settle for an epitaph like “Walk Away, Renee”
The sun upon the roof in winter will draw you out like
    a flower
Meet you at the statue in an hour
Meet you at the statue in an hour

      • Its a Belle & Sebastian Song: Piazza, New York Catcher

It was oddly in Juno, recently.

              • One cool thing about the Rangers, they're 5th in walks as batters. I think the Cubs are #1.

                • Actually St. Louis is #1.

And you are wrong... Texas is actually #4 in BBs, even better than you thought .

                  • Wow, 2 wins in a row. Amazing.

Kennedy somehow got through 6 innings allowing only 1 run. It wasn't pretty, though. Confidence in him still low.

Bring on the Mariners. I'll be annoyed if the Yanks fail to sweep (likely, I suppose).

                    • I can live with Soriano batting leadoff; I can even live with him in LF. But I can NOT abide him being out there in the 9th inning with a 1-run lead. Piniella has to come to terms with this.

                      • Um... why? From all I've read and seen, he appears to be a very good defensive LF. He has very good range compared to the ordinary LF.

                        • He has a great arm.

But he is a butcher, he gets a bad jump, and with his physical ills, he can no longer outrun his mistakes. If you think he's a "very good defensive LF" you are criminally unobservant.

                          • Look at the range factor. He's covers more ground in LF than the league average LFer. No doubt the arm helps him with assists, but he has to get to the areas for the putouts.

Zone Rating: above average (3rd best)
                            Rate2: above average (125)
                            FRAA: above average (+6)
                            RZR: 9th out of 19 (.870)
OOZ: below average (12, injuries might have something to do with that)
Fielding Bible: 6th in throwing, 59 expected plays and 59 plays made, ranks 13th overall in LF plus/minus (+1)
Play in the the 9th inning today: Pathetic, worthless, comical, etc.

So, to recap, his fielding percentage is perfect, range factor and zone rating are 3rd best, his rate2 and FRAA are excellent, his RZR is average, OOZ slightly below average, but 6th in “arm”, made every expected play (does not include today) and ranks 13th overall in plus/minus plays made. These are 2008 stats. These represent Alfonso Soriano’s defensive skill more than Bob Brenly’s quip about throwing a dart at any old player in the Cubs dugout.

I’m all for questioning some metrics, but most of these seem to conclude that Alfonso Soriano is a pretty good defender in LF when compared to other left fielders. Could these all be wrong? Sure. It just isn’t likely.

                            • That's all well and good, but it's history. I'm talking about the here and now. I watch this guy virtually every day.

Even before the 9th, same game, he flat gave up on a very catchable fly ball that bounced off the top of the wall and back into the field (mistakenly ruled a HR).

WATCH HIM AND KNOW: Slow jump, leg injury killing his range, poor concentration, not above giving up on a play, and will not challenge a wall. He's not the same OF defender he was in the past.

                              • So your argument is that your subjective impressions based on watching him play is more accurate than objective statistical analysis?

                                I've heard this argument before...

Oh, and btw, the last link (from anothercubsblog) are from THIS year.
