  • I was really hoping that they'd find a way to bring Derek Anderson over from Cleveland. Pretty slim pickings among free agent QBs this year. Re Grossman, there is something to be said for knowing the offense (such as it is) and terminology. Now Kyle Orton is getting an extension too. Supposedly there will be a fair fight for the starting QB job in camp this year -- but no one in Chcago actually believes that. Griese is clearly the odd man out.

I expect the Bears to draft a QB with their 2nd or 3rd pick. No way will they take one in the first, unless Ryan somehow falls to them. Pre-combine, they were said to be enamored of Flacco.

    • So the Bears wouldn't take Brohm if he fell to them?

      • Not from what I hear. First-round QBs, especially those tagged "most NFL-ready," have a nasty habit of imploding in Chicago. I think we can expect a much safer pick, probably an OT.

        • Which "most NFL ready" first round QB has Chicago picked lately? Not Grossman... he was in Spurrier's Fun N' Gun offense, which we KNOW doesn't produce NFL ready QBs (Shane Matthews, etc).

Zach Thomas' signing, for the money that cap-pinched Dallas paid for him, is pretty risky. The Cowboys paid Thomas $1 million to sign, a $1 million base salary, with $1 million in potential incentives. I thought New England's offer to Thomas made more sense. That offer was something like the principle of the Junior Seau contract last year -- a salary of approximately $1 million, plus an additional bonus paid in one-seventeenth increments for each week Thomas would be active. For a sledgehammer linebacker who will be 35 next opening day and who finished last year unable to play because of a lingering concussion, it makes more sense to pay as you go.

                • The thing about the Bears is that they have no chance of going anywhere next year, so they might as well try out someone who has a greater-than-zero chance of being a successful starting QB.

                  • Or, we can try out the 3-13 record, and hope to get a great QB next year

I wonder what the odds are of that Hawaiian QB still being around at 2.10 or whatever?

                    • Personally, I'd like to see the Bears sign Faneca, then draft an OT in the first round. Shore up the core and go from there. They have plenty of cap money and they claim to have a plan; I just hope that's a major part of it.

If the defense comes back around, they can be competitive. But with question marks all over the offense (no QB talent, O-line retooling, RB not dominant, and likely losing both starting WRs), I expect to be another disappointing season in 2008.

Colt Brennan has been dropping down on most draft boards. His quirky throwing motion and poor performances in the Sugar and Senior Bowls have hurt him, but his accuracy in throwing drills at the combine have answered some of those concerns. There's also a lot of suspicion that he's a "system" product, which summons unfortunate comparisons with names like Andre Ware and David Klingler.

He's now being talked about as a 3rd or 4th rounder. Maybe as high as the end of the 2nd round if someone falls in love with him.

                        • If I were the Bears and not interested in Brohm or Woodson, I'd take Flacco over Brennan, any day.

                            • Either would be fine, but given the choice, I agree that Flacco would be my guy.

                              • I think Brennan will be just as bad as Grossman, another QB who was considered to be deadly accurate, but product of a system. And Grossman played against MUCH tougher defenses in college.
