I'm speaking in general terms. I'd rather see Chicago in the playoffs than Edmonton, for instance.

Don't look now, but Calgary's 6th in the west while Edmonton's 12th.

I note that Calgary has more loser points than all but 1 of the teams they are ahead of.

In fact, reliance on loser points seems to be a theme.

Eliminate loser points and the Flames miss the playoffs last year and would be clinging to 8th this.

And the reason Calgary has so many "loser" points is because they're horrid at shootouts, so many teams ahead of them get the bonus points...

I think "loser points" are far more valid than shootout bonus points. Shootouts have nothing to do with the game of hockey. It's a glorified skills expedition that somehow decides points for entire hockey teams, when it's not a team thing at all. On the other hand, splitting the two points between teams that did not break the draw at the end of regulation and OT is pretty fair.

You laugh all you want, but at the end of the day it's what you do in regulation/OT that matters -- not the shootout.

The Oilers are absolutely dreadful where it matters. Some people choose to stay ignorant about that, but that's their own failing. Their record is saved due to Bettman's crusade to get the game more popular in the states by "always having a winner". It ain't real hockey to win in a shootout, and deep down I'm sure you know it.

I personally prefer the "One less skater per OT period" theory... 4 per side in the first OT, 3 in the second, 2 in the third, 1 in the fourth, and then in the fifth OT it's just goalie vs. goalie ... could you imagine Dominic Hasek vs Martin Brodeur one on one
