At the end of the season we can ask that, at the end of the day the record in the beginning of the season isn't all that important. Anaheim and Ottawa both had rotten starts to the season last year.

      • Holy ****, Edmonton won another shootout? What % of their wins come from shootouts? Man, do I hate shootouts.

This is another reason records are misleading -- Edmonton's record is hugely inflated by shootout wins. When the games matter, in the playoffs, that's not an option so it's a rather misleading figure to look at.

Edit: 5 of the Oilers 14 wins came from shootouts.

        • At the end of the day is intended to imply when everything's said and done, eg, at the end of the season...

          • hmmm-- will I get a shutout? I played both Emery and Gerber and they played 6 and 54 minutes respectively of Ottawa's 6-0 win Apparently Emery gets the win for playing the first 6 minutes but does ANYONE get a shutout--

I think it is more like 8.

I feared that-- If I had just one of them, not getting the shutout would be easier--but I have both and there is no doubt that between them, they got a shutout

                  Oh well-- c'est la vie

According to a tsn story last night, Edmonton was 8-1 in the shootout-- an exceptional record-- It actually comprises over half their wins

I wouldn't whine about this ever-- its part of the game and applause to any team that has found a way to maximize points in this fashion.

But is definitely within bounds to observe that that the Oilers results within the part of the game that all of the team plays is a bit worse than their official record suggests-- its no differnt than observing that the Flames as a team have actually played worse in their last couple of wins than they did in most of their losses and that the difference has been entirely goaltending.

The Oil have actually been better this year than I expected . But even with that amazing shootout record, the Oil are still outside looking in on the playoff hunt. If after going 8-1 in shootouts, you are still not in a playoff spot, I don't think that bodes well for your playoff chances-- You are already getting 2 points from a disproportionately high number of the close games-- in fact such a high proportion that improvement is impossible and a drop off is likely.

The other reason I don't like the Oil's chances much is that I have watched too many games where they appear outclassed and outplayed (regardless of what the score turns out to be). Now this happens to every team from time to time but I have seen it a little too much from the Oilers to think they are close to being a legitimate playoff contender. Perhaps their young guys will improve enough to change that but I have my doubts for this year.

                    • It does appear that Parity is hitting the NHL-- There is arguably only one elite team in the West (Detroit)-- heck Vancouver is in second and frankly they are badly outplayed in many of their wins and only get the 2 points due to Luongo's heroics. Heck the last place Kings have scored more goals than half the teams in the conference (with better goaltending who knows?-- give them Luongo and and I don't doubt LA could be in the playoff hunt)

Parity-- In the last 10 games NONE of the western teams had fewer than 4 wins and only ONE team (Detroit) had more than 6-- I don't necessarily expect that pattern to hold but it has led to a pretty bunched set of standings

The east ?? Pretty much the same. Last place Washington is only 6 points out of a playoff spot more than a third of the way through the season and they are 6-3-1 in their last 10.

heck with all those 3 point games-- 24 out of 30 teams in the league can boast a ".500" record-- But we all know how inflated that is. If I win two shootouts and lose two shootout, my record would be ".750" (6 of a possible 8 points)

                        Wow.

                          • Wow, Kipper has an off night...

So Iginla and Huselius have hattricks, Iginla's a natural. And Phaneuf adds 5 frickin assists.

                            They win the game 9-6.

Iginla took over and won that game.

They had a brutal first 20 games. 7-12-1 and were second from last in the league.

A lot of people up here picked them out of the playoffs. I thought 7th to 10th before the season.

                                You're not reporting any news.
