  • Wow. 6 of the Oilers 10 wins have come from shootouts. It's the entire reason this team isn't so far behind everyone it isn't even funny.

    If there was ever a case against the shootout, this is it.

      Peddie: Hiring Ferguson was a mistake

      The Canadian Press
      11/27/2007 11:46:58 AM

      A day after Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson Jr. denied reports that he tried to fire coach Paul Maurice, Ferguson himself might be looking over his shoulder.

      Richard Peddie, the President of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, told the Toronto Sun that hiring Ferguson, who had no prior experience as a general manager, was a mistake.

      "To be honest, it was a mistake on my part for not fully understanding at the time what the job of being (the Leafs GM) in this market fully entailed," Peddie told the Sun. "Let's face it. It probably was the wrong place for a rookie general manager to start. I mean, all GMs make mistakes, but they are not under the constant microscope and scrutiny that you have in Toronto, which is, in our opinion, the top hockey market there is.

      "That is all hindsight now. John has had time to learn a lot since then."

      Power Rankings: Leafs #28
      Under Ferguson, the Leafs have a 134-99-34 record and have made the playoffs just once in three NHL seasons.

      The 40-year-old executive was a dark horse hire in August of 2003, beating out high-profile candidates like Neil Smith and Steve Tambellini for the position. Ferguson came on board with no previous GM experience, but worked as assistant general manager and vice-president and director of hockey operations for the St. Louis Blues. He was also a member of the Ottawa Senators' scouting staff from 1993 to 1996.

      Peddie also denied reports that the Leafs have been looking for candidates to replace either Ferguson or Maurice.

      "We have not had talks along those lines with anyone since the summer," Peddie said to the Sun, referring to the off-season hunt for a senior adviser to help Ferguson.

      Despite the fan and media outcry for the team the make changes, he told the paper that they won't make any hasty decisions.

      "We're not reactionary in this tough time but we feel (the fans' anger)," he told the Sun. "We read the papers. We listen to the talk shows. We know, believe me."

      • Toronto (and to a lesser extent, Edmonton) have phenomenal high-level mismanagement. It's amazing to me.

          • That was my belief after the McCabe contract.

            And it was my belief after the Vanek fiasco in Edmonton.

            I'm just ahead of the curve, I guess.

            Lowe's been spectacularly bad. The Oilers are so terrible that most fans would at least have solace in the fact that the draft this year is very deep and very good...but Oilers gave them away for a giant pylon named Penner.

              Don't look now, dude. Calgary has fewer wins than at least 23 other teams.

              Sutter's genius creation has 2 more than JFJ's.

              • The problem is Calgary isn't a fundamentally flawed team, while Toronto and Edmonton most certainly are. That's what I look at more when condemning GMs, not early season performance.

                The key word in my quote there was "high-level", and the problems in Calgary certainly aren't high-level like they are in Toronto and Edmonton. For starters, the Calgary ownership group isn't a gongshow.

                BTW, your comparison is a bit loaded. Calgary's got 10 wins right now. 2 more shootout wins and Calgary would be in the top 10 teams in terms of wins in the league. Calgary can't win shootouts to save it's life, so there you have it. It's a terrible comparison this early in the season.

                  The Flames have sucked. Paint it however you wish.

                    I'd say the McCabe contract was among the least of his mistakes, but only because he's made so many other big whoppers like:

                    - Signing Belfour to a two-year contract, during the lockout (Belfour was a great goalie, but to sign him before knowing what the collective agreement would be was mindboggling stupid);
                    - Giving contracts to players who had not yet proven their worth on the team (Raycroft, Voskala and Kubina to name a few);
                    - Failing to sign top players after the lockout (so many missed opportunities);
                    - Signing too many players who were trying to make a comeback (Lindros, Allison, O'Neill, Raycroft),
                    - His habit of signing bad drivers whose personal problems affected their play (O'Neill and Bell); and
                    - Most important of all, a complete lack of any comprehensible building plan.

                      Don't forget that he traded one of the top goalie prospects in the league for Raycroft, and then traded the future again for Toskala.

                        Actually the end performance as a team does suck compared to expectations thus far.

                        But the team has improved its defensive play markedly in the last 10 games (they had a string of games giving up 23 or fewer shots before the Detroit game).

                        The problem is simple: goaltending.

                        It has been adequate at best. I do not believe that the Flames have won a single game in which they have been outplayed while I myself have witnessed a couple of games for both Edmonton and Vancouver where they won despite being decidedly outplayed at every except at goalie. In fact most teams have had that

                        Kipper has given up a very bad goal in most games and even in the games he didn't (like the 2-1 loss to Chicago) he didn't make the tough stops. In the Chicago game, the Hawks scored on both their breakaways .. . Its a breakaway so not really the keeper's fault but in the game I don't think Kipper faced another shot that was more than mediocre-- When they needed a big stop he let them down.

                        This is a team that invested a lot in this keeper and he has let them down so far. Early on the defense made a LOT of mistakes and the offense scored lots so you didn't notice Kipper as much in the high scoring shooting fests. But now when the defense tightens and your offense scores less you really start to notice that he just isn't getting it done.

                        The secondary problem is second line scoring. The third and 4th lines have started to play better and even chiipped in a few goals here and there as has the D. But Huselius and Langkow are invisible and there are talks of one or both (mainly Huselius) perhaps getting a healthy scratch. Huselius frustrates me as he is so creative sometimes but often he is just a big floater that seems disinterested in the game

                        I see some promise in this squad but as I said about 8 weeks ago, I still think they need some big guys up front. Its one thing to hit a lot-- and the Flames are doing taht more and more but I think they need some guys that can muscle through a d-men to get the chance on net. I just don't see that among their top 6 forwards

                            That's certainly got to be a major reason. Kipper has Raycroft-esque numbers so far this year: 32nd out 40 in the league in GAA, 37th in save percentage and no shutouts.

                              But don't they still have Pogge? Now is not the time to bring him up into the Toronto mess but if he turns into a long term blue-chip guy ( as likely for him as for most goalie prospects) the "trading away of the future"
                              won't seem so bad.

                              I fault the Leafs for just having so many high-priced old guys that frankly don't seem worth the money. Where are the budding superstars that you get a few years service from at a cheap price before they really cost you ??
