He's not desperate - I would not say-- else he would have taken one of my proposals which were pretty reasonable

Two Detroit goalies mean a LOT of wins and a good chance at shutouts

1 good scorer for that is not bad IMHO--

But I have always had an inflated view of the value of goalies

The last trade I made was trading Gionta for Iginla and it paid off sweetly. Too bad Sava isn't playing anymore, he had such a weird view on player value.

I'm not desperate is right. My offense is very strong, I just traded in a skater who basically did nothing for me all season (0g 1a) for a mediocre-at-best goalie. I've got 3 goalies now, so while they may not be the best quality each, between the three of them I should be able to get some W at least and the odd SHO, which will help even more.

Another thing to consider is you don't need to be #1 in the standings in the regular season. You need to get into the playoffs, and then there you can win every matchup 4-3-1 and still win the league. I squeaked into the playoffs last year and then made it to 3rd (barely losing to Sparrow IIRC), so it's not all that important to always win all stats...just a majority of them.

I'm willing to part with St Louis (a 100pts+ scorer) because I've got a very strong lineup of assist-heavy players already (Crosby, Stastny, Kopitar, Kane, McCabe(?), etc) so losing St Louis isn't the end of the world for me. But to make up for the huge value of St Louis (he was a top-end draft pick) I'm looking for a huge value in goal (that is, a #1 starter on a good team).

I have no doubt that St Louis is worth a starter- We just differed on which starter he was worth


If St Louis gets his hundred points again this year he is worth a lot. But the pattern over the prior years was 70-94-61-102. So to talk as if he were a consistent 100 point guy would not be accurate.. His average is just short of 82 points-- with his best season being his last. At 32, will he continue at a high level or decline a bit.

I actually thought your behavior with me was as someone that had recognized a need but that was not willing to give away the shop to address it. ie wanted a trade but did not NEED one.

I think we both asked for players that the other saw as core to their own teams and thats why we did not get a deal done-- Fair ball all around and I would definitely be up to trying again some time

I assumed you're aware of Hasek's injury, though that probably makes the trade easier to accept as Osgood is playing better and less difficulty deciding who to start

If St Louis doesn't improve you'll probably gain some here (unless DET trades for another goalie, which they could, if Hasek is hurt long term); but I don't have the knowledge or the time to decide who to start each day, so i'm only getting probably 50 games total from the DET goalies. Given I keep losing due to skater categories, if I can manage one or two goalie categories with vokoun and budaj, I should be okay hopefully

Besides, with Hossa and St Louis I should have the best RW pair in the league now ...

Here's why I'm okay with the trade:

St Louis has good year/bad year syndrome, this may be a bad year (so far he's a point a game, decent but I've got 4 players outperforming this already).

Detroit's defense is unbelievably good at reducing shots on goal, and they're going to get a lot of wins.

Hasek and Osgood will probably split starts this year, but both have great stats and both will get wins. I'm aware of Hasek's slight injury -- and when doesn't he get that at his age -- but a monkey could play in goal for Detroit and get wins with decent stats right now.

Yeah, Flubber and I talked about that some. I don't tend to believe in good year/bad year syndrome myself, so I think he'll be fine. 80+ PPG is fine for me, if he gets me wins in PPA and A i'll be happy

I think it's a good trade for both of us, it addresses each of our weaknesses.
