It has implications for when they become UFA. If you "play" 10 games in an NHL season, you start the UFA clock.

Well, aside from the fact that he wouldn't be playing any games while suspended...

      2005 CBA
      Page 27
      10.1 Unrestricted Free Agents.
      (a) Group 3 Players and Free Agents.
      (i) For...
      (D) the 2008-09,
2009-10, 2010-11 League Years, any Player who either has seven
      (7) Accrued Seasons or is 27 years of age or older as of June 30 of
the end of the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 League Year, shall, if
his most recent SPC has expired, with such expiry occurring either
as of June 30 of the applicable League Year or June 30 of any prior
League Year, become an Unrestricted Free Agent.

      Page 2
"Accrued Season" means any League Year during which a Player was on
a Club's Active Roster for 40 (30 if the Player is a goalie) or more Regular Season Games,
provided that, for the purposes of calculating an Accrued Season under this Agreement,
games missed due to a hockey-related injury incurred while on a Club's Active Roster
shall count as games played for purposes of calculating an Accrued Season but only
during the League Year in which the injury was incurred and a maximum of one
      additional season.

I think you may have it confused with another topic.

        Some don't, and some won't.

Some of the European leagues where fighting is banned are infamous for stick work.

Even the NHL now with the instigator rule has guys like Avery running around being a clown with little fear of the consequences.

I'd be willing to bet that a league without the instigator rule would not have seen Downie even try to make that hit.

He would be on the active roster. Else the suspension would not be served.

If I'm confusing it with another topic, then it all depends on if Downie is a junior player.

Under the CBA, junior-aged players can be on the active roster for only 9 games -- any more and their contract kicks in.

He can be on the roster for 40 games without it counting as a year towards UFA status.

In any case, since he'll be 27 as of June 30, 2014 he will be UFA at the end of 7 seasons from now even if he is not on a roster for a single game.

There is no 10 game rule for rookies involved.

Now, let's see what the league does with Rypien.

I'm referring to the start of his contract (eg, starting a contract year). I was mistaken about UFA, it's about the year of his contract starting.

The CBA says for junior-aged players, blahblahblah (see previous post).

The start of his contract is irrelevant.

Young players get measured by games played/on the roster for various forms of free agency.

None of those really apply to Downie due to his age.

Actually, it might affect his RFA eligibility.

But I'm not sure teams are going to be rushing with offer sheets for Mr. Downie.

He's not a bad player, and has potential. Aside from that going deaf thing.
