When Smith was surrounded by good players at Man Utd his distribution was still rubbish. Big Sam seems to prefer filling the centre with "get stuck in" types though.

That's brilliant. Thanks for that man.
Moby. Newcastle sacked Roeder because he wasn't winning when most of the first team were injured. This is despite him dragging us from relegation fodder to European qualification the previous season.
Short summary: it was because Fat Fred was an eejit.Only feebs vote.

The worrying thig is that the first headline I saw on the telly here this morning is that Big Sam is now "in the frame" for the Republic of Ireland job since he no longer works for Newcastle FC.
Actually it would be worrying if the media over here weren't eejits. Then again the FAI are eejits so maybe....Never give an AI an even break.

Yeah, I thought he was really hard done by, but that's Newcastle for you - excessively high expectations!Originally posted by Agathon

When you lot finally realise you're only a mid-table team perhaps then you'll let a manager stick around long enough to take you to the next level. Alex Ferguson would never have stood a chance if he was starting out in the current Premiership environment, let alone Newcastle...
I was hoping Shearer would be next up, so I could laugh at Newcastle for another year or so as the morons in charge brought in someone with absolutely zero managerial experience as a sort of messiah…
Shearer it appears is smarter than I realised.

How so? We are the 13th richest club in the world (the 5th in Britain), and have the 3rd highest attendance in the league. Newcastle fans have the right to complain if the club is not at least competing for Europe every season. That has been the expectation of the board and the fans since the turn of the century. Every other club of similar size has the same or better expectations.Originally posted by MOBIUS

Hell, how can you call us hard on managers when Rafa Benitez looks like he's going to be sacked after taking Liverpool to the Champions League final twice and winning it once? Liverpool are fifth in the table, and he's probably the next manager to get the sack.
What about Arsenal? They gave Stewart Houston less time than we gave Roeder, and Rioch was gone after one season. Wenger kept his job because he came third in his first season at the helm.
Allardyce was sacked because the fans hated him, and there were enough people who weren't going to pay to watch the ****e he dished up that it was becoming bad business to keep him. This is honestly the first time I've heard many season ticket holders talk about not renewing. These are the same people who have turned up for years, even when we were doing worse than now.
Newcastle fans will go to games as long as the team looks like it is trying and is at least making a go of playing decent football. I remember attending games in the early 90s where we were playing such impressive second division sides as Bristol Rovers and Port Vale, and we'd still get 30,000 a game (back before the stadium expansion).
A mid table team? Surely you jest. When you lot finally realise you're only a mid-table team perhaps then you'll let a manager stick around long enough to take you to the next level.
1993-4 = 3rd place.
1994-5 = 6th place.
1995-6 = 2nd place.
1996-7 = 2nd place.
1997-8 = 13th place.
1998-9 = 13th place.
1999-0 = 11th place.
2000-1 = 11th place.
2001-2 = 4th place.
2002-3 = 3rd place.
2003-4 = 5th place.
2004-5 = 14th place.
2005-6 = 7th place.
2006-7 = 13th place.
That's 8 finishes in the top third of the league and only 5 in the mid third of the table. That hardly makes us a consistently mid table side, since we've spent more time at the top end.
We are fifth in the all time Premier League Table. So take your BS accusations and stick em.
That's true about Taggart, but out of all Newcastle's sackings only 2 were suspect. Robson was sacked against the wishes of the majority of fans, although he was getting too old and probably wouldn't have stayed much longer, and Roeder was unfairly sacked because of the ridiculous injury crisis.Alex Ferguson would never have stood a chance if he was starting out in the current Premiership environment, let alone Newcastle...
Any team would have sacked Dalglish, because he inherited an excellent team and proceeded to sell the good players (the ones that beat Barcelona) and replace them with the likes of Ian Rush and John Barnes. Gullit had completely lost the plot. How else do you explain keeping Shearer and Ferguson on the bench in the most important game of the season? Souness was absolutely awful and was so tactically inept that he had players colliding in the centre circle. Allardyce was actually worse than those guys.
Well, we once did that with a guy named Kevin Keegan and he had Newcastle playing the most attractive and exciting football I've seen in the league, and no-one has managed to match his results since. When he was the manager we regularly put even top teams to the sword. The club was a natural fit for him, and he did very well.I was hoping Shearer would be next up, so I could laugh at Newcastle for another year or so as the morons in charge brought in someone with absolutely zero managerial experience as a sort of messiah…

But the important point is that you've failed to acknowledge that the morons in charge are gone. Fat Fred is no longer with us, and Allardyce was merely the last of his poor decisions as Chairman of the club. In fact, the poor decisions are mostly down to him, since Keegan resigned shortly after FF took over rather than have to work under him, and hiring Robson was the only decent thing he ever did (although he undermined Robson by buying players without his consent). He also looted the team's finances to enrich himself and his buddies. If anything, that is the difference between us and the top four teams. They've had decent owners for years.
Now we actually have decent ownership for the first time since the mid nineties (and that was the only time we'd ever had it before), so things should be looking up.Last edited by Agathon; January 10, 2008, 12:30.Only feebs vote.

Upper mid table I'll grant you but mid table nonetheless...
If we only take the last decade into consideration instead of the ancient history you seem to want to use to skew your figures - then you are mid mid table!

Normal people divide the league into top, middle and bottom thirds. That's what "middle" means.Originally posted by MOBIUS

Besides, we are fifth all time in the premier league, and we're above Everton, Villa and Spurs despite having played an entire season less in the top flight.
That's arbitrary. Why not take the last five years? Then it would be 3 top third finishes and 2 mid table finishes. If we only take the last decade into consideration instead of the ancient history you seem to want to use to skew your figures - then you are mid mid table!

At least taking all seasons in the PL is complete and fairly recent. You are just picking what suits you because you were so ****ing wrong.
