Sky, Mastercard and the rest of them are not going to fork out squillions for FC Retsina v Dynamo Tractorworks. That's what the UEFA cup is for. The premier club tournament in the world needs the best clubs - and that means several clubs from the best leagues. English clubs have made the final three years running, and had three clubs in this year's semis. Recently we had three Italian clubs in the semis. That shows the strength of these leagues.
The tournament is much stronger and harder to win these days than in the old format, where only a handful of decent teams would be playing. These days every tinpot newly balkanised or seceding nation would get a seat and we'd soon end up with Ushka Pristina v Partisan Podgorica in the quarter finals.
