Not pedantic at all. You pulled a "fact" out of your ass. I called you on it. You tried to obfuscate, when your source didn't support your "fact." I declined to follow.

You cannot just hold as constant those variables that aren't constant. Maybe the difference between starting 30 games and starting 40 games is disproportionately large, f.e. Maybe the extra 10 games is worth 10 percentage points in accuracy. Who knows. Your source gives no sense of how this plays out mathematically.

Don't get me wrong. The source is good as far as it goes, but it doesn't support your statement. The source basically emphasizes that those players who start a lot of college games -- for whatever reason -- have a leg up in the NFL.

Going back to Stanton, at least Guy and I surmise that Stanton sucks ass, despite his accuracy. His head's full of marbles and he throws the ball to the opposition a lot. Both Guy and I are familiar with his play, so we have anecdotal evidence that he sucks ass.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Can I now be pedantic and say you just pulled a fact out of your ass which is no supported by the source?

        • No you can't, because my statement allows for legs up due to other factors and does not purport to measure the relative value of the leg.

          • Now back to how bad Stanton sucks ass, some of his games are just inexplicable. He completed only 45% of his passes against Notre Dame in 2006, where MSU led big the whole way, and had two interceptions against a defense that was plain bad (I think you'll have to agree).

            Why?

            • To nitpick, the source doesn't say that at all. It says that games started and completion percentage account for 65% of predictive value. It does not say whether these variables are measured alone or in tandem (which games started is important in "early first round Quarterbacks" the fact remains that they usually aren't going to be early first round QBs without high completion percentages in the college ranks - for example, JaMarcus Russell was only an early first round pick because of his very high completion percentage in his senior season, if it was more in line with his junior year, there is no way he goes even in the Top 15)

For example, the number of games Kyle Boller started did not give him any 'leg up' over a QB with lower starts due to Boller's low completion percentage.

              • Well, in any event, it's not my source. You can defend it or try to divine what its point is.

Personally, I think that high games started is an asset. I'm not making a precise point, but more experience is better than less experience, at least as far as bankable QBs go.

                • Lewin is definitely a strong supporter of games started.

Just read this line by him in the Jamarcus Russell article:

Here’s that under 30 starts list again: Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Akili Smith, Michael Vick, David Carr, Joey Harrington, Alex Smith.

Stanton and Russell are both in this category ...

                  • I think people talk themselves into making picks. They fall in love, such that Russell's lack of starts is thought of as up-side, f.e. They think 46 starts shows a ceiling.

                      • Examples are not proof.
                        Examples are anecdotes.

Stanton having a bad game, Brady starting < 30 games... It's all just BS used conveniently to support a point of view.

The flip side of that coin: using correlative techniques to criticize an individual draft choice.

We're talking about people here, not statistics.

                            • I hate to bring it up, but apparently Stanton is as well thought of as that guy at Ohio State.
