I mean the Islanders also made the playoffs, but have even less of an average attendance than the Devils do, while the Rangers fill to capacity. Not sure anyone would make the silly argument that the "style of play" is hurting the Isles' attendance numbers as well.
As hinted by Kontiki, if you place a team right in the middle of an established fanbase (North Jersey hockey fans have traditionally followed the Rangers), it's going to be hard to get fans for the new team. And if you try to get fans from South Jersey, you run into the problem that most of the hockey fans down there have followed the Flyers. So, basically you pick up the rest... and that isn't exactly a lot of hockey fans.
As for the question of what the Devils do for revenue... well, they traditionally haven't spent much on payroll, instead focusing on a "team" concept under Lamoriello, and jettisoning players who complain for higher contracts (Bill Guerin being a primary example). Even then, revenue was an issue, as a move to Nashville was being discussed before the Devils won their first Stanley Cup. Since then, I think their financials have improved. And will even more when they move to Newark.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Asher: JLA is one of the oldest buildings in the league, of course it's a pit compared to most arenas. They're exploring options for a new arena. Give it a rest, man.
As for the non-sellout, something else you need to understand is that the Red Wings organization has, unfortunately, priced themselves out of their fan demographic. The vast majority of fans can't afford a regular season ticket, let alone a playoff ticket. For many fans, it is more affordable to see the Wings play in Columbus or Chicago than it is to see them play at home.
And lastly, if you really think Calgary stacks up to the Wings talentwise, from top to bottom, you are out of your goddamned mind. 51-15 in shots! Not all of that is coaching, my friend. If it weren't for Kipper, the aggregate score thus far would probably be 15-2, instead of 7-2."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

Why did they split the season series if they didn't match up talent-wise? Why did the Flames spank the Redwings out of the playoffs in 04?
They're comparable, but the coaching and system Playfair is using is amazingly, incomprehensively bad. It's almost legendary, now.

Oh, weak-ass. The Saddledome is all of four whole years newer than the JLA and it's WAY better categorically. That argument doesn't hold any water."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

In fact, it was. Stop squirming.
If you think the sum of Calgary's talent can be summed up by the 51-15 shots against Detroit, YOU are out of your mind. In the same boat as Tingkai."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Top to bottom, the Wings are more talented. Top to top? Equal. Maybe even less talented. But taking the rosters as a whole, I'll take Detroit without a second thought."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

Yes. It's a pit. I've never been to the Saddledome, but I hope you'll excuse me if I don't take your word for its quality. Your powers of assessment are very much in doubt right now.

I think Calgary's roster is phenomenal.
Do you think Detroit's 3rd d-pairing can compete with Calgary's, seriously? And don't bring up SOG...I think it should be very clear that the coaching systems have a LOT to do with that."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. You take Calgary's 3rd D; I'll take the Wings' 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lines, and 1st D. By a country mile. (And the first line is a push.)
As for the 2nd line, who is Detroit's second line officially?
That Phaneuf vs Lidstrom -- let's assume a GM is given a choice. They can get Phaneuf or Lidstrom on a 5-year contract, who would you pick?"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

It's much more fluid than most teams; bottom line, their #4-#12 forwards are better than Calgary's.
And I'm not concerned about Lidstrom's age. He still looks and plays like he's 28."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

Name Calgary's Top 3 forwards so I can exclude them, ditto for Detroit. I wanna do a comparison."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
