It's almost comical how fragile that team is, in more ways than one.

This season has been one of woe. I'd expect a lot better next year (with or without MacT).

Your most promising player, Hemsky, is about to be overtaken by Moss in terms of goal scoring. And Moss has played a lot less games...

All the Oilers are down in goal scoring. The exception to that was Smyth. Surprise, surprise... which one was playing for a contract?

I don't know why, but it is quite common for a marginal team that goes to the SCF to implode the following year. The Oilers certainly aren't bucking that trend.

I'd have to agree there are problems. Shortage of leadership and below average coaching (erratic actions not yielding results) would be two. Third would be inexperience on the blue line. They are big problems, but I wouldn't go so far as saying 'a lot of'.

Montreal -- I thought they were a good enough team to make the playoffs but with Huet injured, they don't seem to have the goaltending needed. I'm not optomistic unless the goaltending markedly improves

Toronto-- My call on them was always a team that was just good enough to break the heart of their fans. Thats exactly where they sit right now (but with two games in hand)-- Raycroft has frequently played betetr than I expected . .. but he seems inconsistent so who knows where this wild ride will end up.

oh and watch out for Boston-- in many ways they don't seem like a good enough team to make the playoffs. They ahve given up far too many goals but there they sit-- 4 points out of the playoffs with 3 games in hand -- Thats exactly the same position as the Rangers.

Bad news for everyone else is that Atlanta seems to be getting their act together. For a while there, it looked as if they would fall right out of the playoffs

Carolina got doubly screwed when Nashville traded the blank Czech back for Eric Belanger, who was shipped to Atlanta despite some sort of assurance that it wouldn't happen. Rumor has it he was unhappy with the Canes - certainly, he didn't get to do as on much special teams as he did in LA - but he was pretty effective nonetheless, and is on a tear with the Thrashers.

If the Hurricanes get in the playoffs, it will be due to the miscues of Canadian teams rather than controlling their own destiny. And they'd get to play the payback-hungry Sabres.
