Yup, but at least the GMs recommended a loosening of the instigator.

Next up, 3 points for a RT win.

Oh, and never quit. Never surrender. I like how the Oilers played that game. I don't care if they make it or not so long as they show some desire, although I would like to see a cure for the snake-bite so many are suffering.

    • In the east, the night went as well as Montreal could be hoped . They won again and most of their immediate competitors in7th through 10th lost-- They are now technically in a playoff spot but HAVE played more games

      • Avs win-- the Flames probably deserved a better fate-- They got owned by the Avs in the first but only trailed 3-2 .. . Then they outplayed the Avs most of the rest of the way but still lost 4-3

pk on the road really let them down as they gave up THREE pp goals

plus I believe I misread the standings and with the Flames loss they are EIGHT points out.

But I don't like the Oils chance to catch the Flames-- I think the Flames current record is UNDERPERFORMING as it is and there is no way in hell the Flames don't make the playoffs

I haven't done the math but I believe the Flames this year would have been a big beneficiary of that system. I think that since the Flames NEVER win shootouts and have had maybe one winning OT.

I would be curious to see Minny's record would be ahead of Colorado or the Oilers in such a system. They seem to get a LOT of shootout wins

            • Whether or not it would help the Oilers this year, it eliminates the dreaded 3 point games when just winning is only good for 2.

The major argument against is the records, but that is not a real argument since the historical records can easily be turned into winning percentage, and the current system makes it possible for far more points, in more games, than the 'great teams' like the Islanders, Oilers, Flyers, and Habs of yor earned.

              • I don't see why the overtime point for a loss is neccesary anymore. I could understand it in a system with ties, but now?

                • I hated the system of giving a point to both teams when tied after 60 minutes and playing overtime for the additional point when they first introduced it and still do today. the reason I hated it was it made some games worth more then other (and the statistical comparisons, but those are already f****ed up because of hte earlier change).

I beleive the 3 point game would be a great step in the right direction as at least all games would have the same value.

The ultimate solution to me would be returning all games to 2 points such as Ninot suggests above, but i doubt that is going to happen

                  • Because shootouts aren't really a great way to determine the winner of a hockey game, and winning by shootout is a far cry from winning a real game?

I honestly much preferred the old one OT and a tie, no extra points, nothing. So what if nobody ever scored in the OT ... at least you can try to score if you desperately need the point

If the Flames played .500 hockey on the road, they'd have 79 points...

                      • Colorado and Edmonton just won't go away. Eight points out with 22 games to go. They continue to linger in the vicinity of contention but just outside. I don't forsee a run

meanwhile I am basking in the joy of my Habs ressurection back to 7th place ( for the moment) -- BUt what a race!!!

                        TORONTO 1pt out -- 2games in hand
                        10 NY ISLANDERS 1pt out -- 2games in hand
                        11 NY RANGERS 4pts out -- 2games in hand
                        12 BOSTON 5pts out -- 3games in hand

                        Its a true mess!!

                        • St. Louis is a little surprising as well. Only one point behind Colorado and Edmonton (though both have a game in hand). I don't see the Blues being able to string together enough wins, but still....

Philly has all of 5 wins at home, though. Talk about some great value for the Flyers season ticket holders.

They are in it almost as much as Colorado and Edmonton-- which means not a lot of hope without the help of a bit of a collapse from someone. If you assume a point per game average from the leaders, the chasers now need 30 points from 22 games to catch up and tie so 15-7-0, 14-6-2 or similar. St Louis have one fewer game to make up one more point so 15-5-1 would be needed --ouch
