    • Oops, no more. Griese to Bradley, 75 yds to break up the shutout. Blown coverage.

Last year, the Bears sat Grossman in the meaningless finale, then looked flat on offense for the first 25 minutes against Carolina. This year, Lovie decided to keep people in, errr, rhythm. Grossman played a half. Jones got his 10 touches.

          Well, that was the thought...

          • Well, hopefully the play tonight will keep Grossman from getting too rusty during the bye week.

              • If only the Giants had lost...

I would have liked to see the Pack make the playoffs but ending the season with 4 straight wins and going 5-1 in the division has been good.

If the Packers can spend some of that cap room (Tony Gonzalez please) and assemble some more talent, I'd like to see Favre come back for one more year to break all of the records and make one last serious push at the playoffs.

                • Favre's crazy if he doesn't come back. He can still play the game and the team defied most reasonable expectations with its performance this year and (given the poor quality of its division and the NFC as a whole) is not that far at all from making it back to the playoffs. (Heck, in a just world, the Giants would have choked again yesterday and they'd be sitting at home while Green Bay heads to Philly.) He's got less reason to retire this year than he did last year.

Come back, Brett. The game won't be the same without you.

                  • Why can't the Bears ever draft an good QB? They ALL stink up the joint something awful.

                    • While he did have his 8th game thus year with a QB rating <40 today, Grossman did show us flashes of ability this year, and actually started all 16 games. He has the arm, if he can just learn to feel the rush coming and keep his poise. Considering the past couple years, that's big progress.

Don't know if that's more an indictment of their draft history, or a comment on how the Bears offense is finally catching up to some fairly obvious trends they've never exploited. No matter what the post-season result this year, the arrows are trending upward.

                      • Broncos CB shot and killed

Darrent Williams shot and killed in a drive-by shooting...

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning, police said.

Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed.

Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization.

"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.

Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.

                          • Cedric Benson is so much better than Thomas Jones.

Thomas Jones dances in the backfield and maybe gets a few yards each carry. The problem is, he's not Barry Sanders. He doesn't have the speed to juke a defender then burst through a cutback lane. Cedric Benson powers through the lanes while running straight ahead right after the hand off.

But it really doesn't matter because Ron Turner's play calling is so awful, he'd rather just run the ball once (usually a 2 yard Thomas Jones run), then have Grossman throw an interception on a poorly designed pass play where Desmond Clark is supposed to outrun a safety to the outside.

I don't even know if getting Tillman and Todd Johnson back on defense is going to make a hell of a difference. The only thing the Bears have going for them is that the rest of the NFC is a suckfest.

Whoever comes out of the AFC will probably win the Super Bowl. Normally I'd say one and done for the Bears, but the Bears first playoff opponent will likely be just as bad as the Bears, so the Bears could have a good chance of playing in the NFC championship game unless they turn the ball over 5 or 6 times.

That's what this has come down to though... turnovers.

                            What a train wreck.

And Ron Turner needs to go. This offense is poorly designed for the personnel they have, and he calls a terrible game.
To us, it is the BEAST.

                            • I agree on Benson. He was a man last night. Cederic still needs a better commitment to the concept of blocking and lacks patience to let his blockers get outside on off-tackle plays and sweeps. His pass-catching skills are unproven. Jones has better field vision and cutback ability, but lacks power. He would be a good 3rd down back.

I disagree on Turner. He's had some bad games calling plays, true. But as we learned early in the season, the basic design of the offense is sound, and a huge upgrade over the past several years. I'd like to see the team stick with one offensive coordinator. Stability counts.

Now if we can just find a way to keep Evil Rex away...
