Which is 'part' of DC United, no?

I don't think the squad only has 8 players... though that would make their record incredible .

    • Plus D.C. United's coach.

I just think it's bad reporting, since D.C. United with a very similar roster played Chelsea competitively in a friendly last year. We knew what to expect.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. • I don't think it particularly matters.

It can't have been a very large paycheck. Toyota Park only holds 22,000.

But some others are taking home a nice paycheck this year from the US. On Wednesday, Real Madrid v. D.C. United at Qwest Field in Seattle probably will sell out at 67,000. Tickets range from $30 - $125 apiece. Today, Barcelona v. Chivas Guadalajara will do well at the LA Colliseum with capacity ~ 90,000. Tickets are going $25 - $75. On Wednesday, Barcelona v. Club America should do well in Reliant Stadium in Houston -- capacity 69,500. Prices $25 - $75.

To be honest, I don't know why Celtic played D.C. United. There were only ~ 15,000 there since it was mid-week and prices were normal (about $25 for good seats). I guess it probably paid the team's airfare and expenses, but not much more. I thought Celtic would have more of a following here in the States.

          • Heh... Boro went after American defender Onyewu and he said, no thanks, I'll stay in Belgium

            http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...375065&cc=5901'

U.S. international Oguchi Onyewu has turned down an offer from Middlesbrough, preferring instead to stay at Belgian club Standard Liege.

The 24-year-old defender was close to a move to the Barclays Premiership club after impressing as an ever-present during his country's World Cup campaign this summer.

Onyewu, who has two years to run on his Standard contract, said: "I had a nice offer from them [Boro]. I spoke with the coaches, and there was an immediate click.

"The financial picture was good too, but I did not want to sign there. A few details in the contract kept me from signing."

Instead, he will stay at Liege for the time being.

"I have made the decision to stay here at least until the winter break," he told Belgian press.

"I did not go to the World Cup to earn a contract somewhere else; I did it to get more experience.

"I am still in Liege and I will do my utmost here. I told the coach that he could even use me as a central striker if needed."

            • Considering Standard is the better team of those two (as much as that hurts for me to admit as a Dutchman ) and playing CL this year, I hardly find that very surprising...

              • Agreed, but I like to laugh at Boro .

                • Even then it's about as funny as if Van Nistelrooij had snubbed Boro in favour of Real Madrid... (of course, it would've been funny if Boro had approached Ruud, but that's another story )

                  • The comparison is a bit silly isn't it? After all, you are comparing Belgium's league to Spain's .

Standard still has to make it through the final qualification round though, and considering they already lost their 2 first games of the new season the omen is not good.

                      • What's the payroll of a team like Standard? Was that the team we were going to see before being waylaid? (Apologies on my geography, which is unfortunately attrocious.)

Edit: No, damnit. It was much closer to Antwerp.

                        • No, that was Genk. Genk is closer to Liege than to Antwerp though.

Standard don't publish any figures on their payroll. However, their budget is about €16 million, and player's payroll typically takes up about half to three-quarters of budget.

                          • Excellent. Thank you. And how many teams in Belgium have similar or greater payrolls (rough measure)?

                            • Anderlecht is Belgium's strongest team, IIRC their budget is €25. Club Brugge is #2, with a budget of €15 million. Genk also has a budget of that order.

                              Excellent?

                              • Excellent. It's interesting to compare how our infant command-and-control first division (MLS) runs things versus others. Our payrolls only run $1.7 million (New England Revolution) to $3.6 million (Chivas USA). I would guess that there is much greater payroll parity in MLS versus Belgium's first division.

Anderlecht's stadium is about the size of the new soccer specific stadiums being built here. So you can see that the scale of the game in the US is imagined to be similar to that of Belgium rather than, e.g., England. However, the scope will probably be larger in the U.S. than in Belgium. Current plans call for a 16 team league by ~ 2010. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 32 team league within a generation.
