I'm curious how they'll turn this into a trilogy, since this one seems to do well on the box office.

I just went over the posts again. I didn't say anything about it being aimed at "people like me." My whole take on politics is that there aren't enough people like me and we're increasingly headed to a really lame-ass retread of the 1930s where sorta-fashies and sorta-commies have a slapfight over who gets to ruin the country. I don't care about the culture war and want it to go away. My objection is fundamentally aesthetic; if you allow your desire to make a highfalutin' point (whatever the hell it is) to take precedence over getting the work to make sense at a basic level, you have made bad art. That is all.Originally posted by Lorizael View PostI stopped when you didn't bother to respond substantively to my earlier points. Re: anger, you've got multiple very long paragraphs about how a single weird casting choice in a movie you haven't seen and aren't going to see is clearly, obviously, necessarily another salvo in the all-consuming culture war aimed at people like you and not just, like, a decision made in the context of casting a Hollywood movie, where personalities, who knows whom, who's on the rise, etc. are paramount.
I intended post 11 to be a substantive answer to post 8, I just didn't quote. I left out the last bit about her being technically a demigod, so you got me there. But I don't object to her having "remarkable physical features." She can have a halo for all I care. She just, uh, can't have plainly African features, at least not unless you're willing to answer all the questions that raises. Maybe all the gods of Olympus are black in this retelling for some reason, and their genes are really incredibly dominant--that sounds like a really bad idea, but okay, fine, just address it if you're going to do it (if Nolan does in fact have some weird black-gods-of-Olympus thing going, I transfer my objection to that being stupid, but it doesn't sound like he does). Don't leave this weird, nonsensical detail hanging there like the Duck Man in Discworld. And then call me "obsessed with skin color" and pigeonhole me as some kind of crypto-Trumper when I point out that this doesn't make sense. If they cast Peter Dinklage, would I be obsessed with height and gender for wondering why?

Surely more important, is the fact that it was filmed in Western Sahara, despite warnings.
It should be pointed out that from a moral point of view, it should be boycotted 👎"Aha, you must have supported the Iraq war and wear underpants made out of firearms, just like every other American!" Loinburger

Morocco's version of Gaza, just with less extreme genocide and a not so universal flattening of the place. Everything else is pretty similar, except they've already started building the Trumpian style holiday resorts.Originally posted by Bereta_Eder View Postwhy what's going on there?
It's been festering on since 1975. I'm surprised you're unaware? 🙄"Aha, you must have supported the Iraq war and wear underpants made out of firearms, just like every other American!" Loinburger

OTOH, I just ran across this: https://www.reddit.com/r/okbuddycine...olan_intended/
Which is fair enough. The casting in the Odyssey is really bad.
The ancient Greeks would never have cast a woman as Helen of Troy.

Look, are you trying to be Mobius, or the unholy lovechild of Mobius and Molly bloody Bloom? "I was just reading this fascinating book about the Moroccan genocide--it's kind of an obvious subject, of course, not like the genocide in the tiny breakaway ex-Soviet republic of Grztplakistan that took place over three weeks in 1986--and it turns out that one was America's fault too. Long story short, I came twice."Originally posted by I AM MOBIUS View PostIt's been festering on since 1975. I'm surprised you're unaware? 🙄

Actually, in all fairness, now that I've had some time to cool off, I did rather show my ass here. A black woman playing Helen of Troy is still dumb but I came on way too strong and probably should not have posted while wishing I could sleep at zero-ass-thirty. Sorry about that!
EDIT I should also probably apologize for doing three posts in a row.Last edited by Elok; Yesterday, 17:33.

Looked it up. It's ... Downton Abbey a century earlier with black people? Improbable, I'm sure, but you can call it social science fiction. From the description on Wiki, I would probably not be the slightest bit interested in the show, and I expect it's full of all manner of cringey progressive posturing--based on a white woman's books and came out in the George Floyd era, that's pretty well de rigueur--but based on a cursory look it gets a "meh" from me. Different sort of creature from the Helen thing AFAICT.

at the point where we are, I can clearly see nolan casting giannis antentokoumpo as helen of troy. got to keep the american butt on the seat satifiied.Originally posted by Elok View PostOTOH, I just ran across this: https://www.reddit.com/r/okbuddycine...olan_intended/

I'm sure the greek state will find some german money lying around to finance it since it's so important.
no more seriously btw, it's telling that there were very few exceptions to the trans person elliot something.
this could be attributed to two things: he gets killed right away.
apparently greek and gay (or ok trans) don't clash
