  • I think that both Obama and Carter did good things and are good people. Neither was perfect. Both were good presidents. Obama was probably about as perfect a president as we could have had in that decade.

Even though FDR did some bad things, and was not perfect, and wasn't a particularly good person and was maybe not even as perfect a president as we could have during his time, circumstances gave him the challenge of greatness (which they didn't give Carter or Obama, or if they did, Carter and Obama did not pass it) and I think he passed it.

    • Pfff. Roosevelt had it easy. Big bad evil to clearly engage and unite the whole country.

Eisenhower seemed like a good President but he really didn't do much except build some roads. 4th best is fine for him.

Goodbye President Obama. You did do some good things, but I believe you were one of the more divisive Presidents and cannot be considered the best by any stretch.

                • BTW, I mentioned that Carter and Obama didn't obviously face the challenge of greatness. But that if they did, they didn't pass it. The possible challenge that Carter might have faced is to somehow fix the rot that was so clear in the Nixon Republican Party, and that was still troubling us later, arguably to today. I don't know that that was really a challenge that Carter faced, though. The possible challenge that Obama faced is that the rot was almost fully transforming into the cancer that Trump rode to power. Once more, I don't know if that is something that Obama really faced.

Both were definitely challenges of the eras though.

True, but only because Trump and his followers are racist pieces of ****.

I kinda think Obama and his people were a bit racist also.

I think you're conflating Obama with Hillary, and I think we both agree that she was a terrible candidate.

                • Obama was by far the best President since Eisenhower, and he was barely mediocre. A non-senile, uncorrupt, adult, intelligent leader for 8 years is the best we can hope for in this universe.

That is a very sad statement on this country's leadership choices, isn't it?

This has been my contention for decades. Or at least since the start of this thread.

                • I think some of the problem is that Obama didn't have enough of his people to actually clean out the rot, if it was possible for him to do so.

I know a fair number of Obama (2008) -> Trump (2016) voters. Yeah, they are a little racist. But they needed bigger solutions than what Obama was able to deliver (and he delivered some big solutions, just maybe what was actually needed were even bigger ones). Would that have helped clean out the rot? I don't know. But I imagine it might have?

It certainly didn't help that the republicans went 110% contrarian and everything else be damned.
