Conception is not a consistent way to define human life. Brain activity is.... and that starts sometime after week 6. Viability also is, and that is now before week 24 but not much before.

Okay. What's inconsistent about conception, beyond dickering over fertilization versus implantation which is irrelevant by the time the woman's aware she's pregnant anyway?
And as the jester remarks, the line on viability has already moved back considerably and could move back further in the future.
Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve." Tamsin (Lost Girl): "He has fallen in battle and I must take him to the Einherjar in Valhalla"
Oh, brother. This is one of those moments where poorly-informed old people believe they're clever because they can make flippant and superficial remarks about something they've spent two seconds considering, but still think they're superior to their opponents who have ostensibly thought about it even less. In this case, she seems to think "God's will" is a major component of pro-life arguments on the basis that the movement is mostly religious. I took a look at Jesse Ventura's new substack the other day and it's just full of this same junk.
By the definition of human life that gives life beginning at conception then we can continue life almost arbitrarily at the end of life.
This is clearly untrue and so such a definition is inconsistent.

JM, I don't follow you, sorry. Elaborate? Conception is the beginning of the individual biological instance and is quite distinct from what the two haploid cells which produced it. I don't think biological life continues past the point of death. Are you suggesting that because the blastocyst is not developed yet we must give equal consideration to the Terri Schiavo set? If that's the case, nah, that poses no problems for me. There's a substantial difference between incipient life and almost extinguished life, and "if we look at these two moments as snapshots while ignoring their context they look very similar" doesn't really prove much. A guy in very deep sleep isn't doing much to distinguish himself from a corpse, if you ignore the part where he'll be awake and moving around in four hours.
We use brain death as death at the end of life and so using the beginning of brain activity (which may be as early as 6 weeks) is consistent. If we talk about potential, then things get confused because sometimes there is no potential and sometimes there isn't... I could see arguing about potential and keeping a body alive...
Things are a little unclear because what is a brain... but they start being clear when viability hits I would say for everyone. It seems reasonable that at viability that a woman could ask for a child to be removed from her (and then pay a fine, and continued child support).

Forgot to mention this in my reply, but being born at technical viability gives you substantially increased odds of long-term disability. Don't know the details, but you can't miss out on that much developmental time and expect to come out 100% okay. Better than death, sure, but ...
I think you're being a little bit too finicky about definition-as-definition here? I've seen PVS people; they just sit there and drool. If you check back on them tomorrow, they'll still be sitting there and drooling. Ditto in five months if you don't pull the plug by then. They will never, ever, do anything else, unless technology improves to let us basically reconstruct a cerebrum which doesn't seem to be in the cards anytime soon. They're essentially really gross conversation pieces that used to be people. By contrast, any fetus which is not fatally defective has at least some chance of being a very different thing in five months, and in two years will likely be walking around and saying a few words. We think of it as the norm for them to become fully-developed people, and it generally is. One is effectively dead; the other is developing rapidly but has not developed to such a level where it has organized neural functions yet. They could hardly be more different, barring one pedantic similarity that is convincing only if you take a very myopic view of their respective situations. At any rate, if the price for banning infanticide is we waste a bit more money than we already do sustaining the vegomatic crowd, sure, I'll take it. It's not like they feel pain or anything, and I imagine most of them will die of something by and by anyhow.
Nah, you don't rate. I give MWHC crap because he spams a lot and drinks, but he at least comments on the actual topic. Also his avatar reminds me of William Tecumseh Sherman for some reason and that dude was badass so it makes me happy.
I would expect that most people wouldn't pay the fine and would just deliver the baby at term.
