Don't forget the Cold War. Low on Russian casualties but big on Russian losing.

So; after the Ukrainians have finished with them (read : they declare victory and walk home) whatever is left of them is going to challenge NATO...

I read North Korea was testing missiles again these days, maybe to deter Russian aggression

Maybe they will be more successful than the Russian "army".

While we're listing wars Russia lost, how about that Crimean War? Or the Russo-Japanese War?

During the latter, the Russian Navy successfully attacked British fisherman and their own ships:

The Dogger Bank incident (also known as the North Sea Incident, the Russian Outrage or the Incident of Hull) occurred on the night of 21/22 October 1904, when the Baltic Fleet of the Imperial Russian Navy mistook a British trawler fleet from Kingston upon Hull in the Dogger Bank area of the North Sea for Imperial Japanese Navy torpedo boats[1] and fired on them. Russian warships also fired on each other in the chaos of the melée.

So maybe they think it was a partial victory

I'm not a fossil fuel junkie, so the prices are awesome. See Russians have some value.

I have a completely unsubstantiated theory that the real reason North Korea wants nukes is mainly to deter China and partly to deter America.
China is a traditional enemy and on their borders.

I think that the only silver lining behind Putin's genocidal landgrab is that, in Europe at least (I'm not holding much hope for the US), the transition off fossil fuels will be accelerated.

On a serious note, wondering if China's happy with the way things are going. Esp. about Russia's take on separatist regions: diplo-acknowlegding them, and using their "requests" for help as pretext to move into Ukraine. So far China was always keen to avoid that others diplo-accept Taiwan as fully independent...

China is surely making out like a bandit on discounted Russian commodity exports. I even wonder if Chinese exports need to be hit with tariffs in proportion to the amount of trade they are recieving from Russia.

                                Obviously they are pleased.

If later they take actions Russia will find unhelpful it will only be because of behind the scenes pressure and threats by the EU and Americans.
