I'd go with the former. i suspect anyone who thinks nuclear war is a good idea doesn't care too much for civilians (or anyone else for that matter).

I expect a lot of harsh language including the words "encirclement" and/or "russophobia". Plus air/naval movements, hopefully nothing that leads to any sort of open confrontation. But that would be the rational reaction so

Today one of the least reputable UN bodies, the UNHRC, is to vote on removing Russia as a member. While I agree with the idea it is an awful lot like a mafia syndicate voting to remove a crime family because they crime too much. China, currently committing genocide, will be one of the member states passing judgement. It would be hilarious if it weren't so sad/pathetic.

This would only be expected as the outcome of open conflict with NATO. Putin's grand plan may involve engineering a pretext for a strike on NATO which he imagines will lead to an ignored article 5 by Washington. I'm sure he thinks the rest of NATO would not dare oppose him without the US or at least its strategic stockpile to back them up. Then he imagines Russia would impose it's terms on the whole of Europe with a few stark ultimatums. Terms that would exclude a faithless united states.


The stakes are potentially that high and Russia's conventional meltdown in Ukraine may not only be very temporary, as Russia still has the luxury of dialing in it's invasion, but the invasion of Ukraine itself may not even be the main event.
