If Putin was as smart as everyone says he is and wanted to expand Russia, the direction should have been to make Russian friendly Ukrainians politicians and step in at a close election. He might have to wait a while, but once Ukraine stopped focusing on Russia over Crimea/etc, it could. And that would happen, people definitely forget after a decade or two, if they are allowed to.

Maybe we need to reassess all the usual descriptions of Putin like "smart", "brilliant tactician" or "calculated gambler".

Esp. in his ca. hour-long tv adress before the agression he looked like a victim of his own propaganda, with a mindset full of paranoia, controlled by all kinds of grudges against the west, and a take on history that's grounded in nostalgia, not in fact.

Of course hard to say if he as a KGB guy really thinks Kiev is run by Nazis who were doing genocide in Donbas or if he just wanted to sell these lies as an excuse for war. But beyond that much of this speech came across just like an unqualified rant.
