The psychology is that they've so invested themselves into Trump, that any attack on him, they feel like they are being attacked personally. So the more Trump gets criticized, the more they feel they get criticized, and the more they just "dig in," and get nastier and nastier. You see it here on these boards.

This tactic has worked as the opposition has played at a respectable level, until now, when they had enough and had to take the initative back.

We do need to reel them back in at some point after the election to address their needs, but they make it so hard on themselves with constantly going on the offense and all the nonstop hatred. A true power broker that can relate to them and speak their language can bring them back into fold and make them feel important and heard again. Lincoln tried to reconcile but they shot him for it, so I dunno what the answer is, it's definitley not easy.
