I tend to side with Earl F. Ziemke's assessment that high death rates of Soviet military can be blamed on ****ty tactics and crappy medical care.

A more elastic defense would have spared so many more lives.

It's been said that German commanders probed for weaknesses before exploiting them, wheras Soviet tactics attempted to use overwhelming manpower to create the weakness by exhausting German lines with successive waves.
