My dad's girlfriend left for Italy the day after the quake. She is Italian and will be in the south though. My father will be jpining her in a couple weeks and then they will be touring Europe together for a month. On a different note the towns hit hardest apparently had most of their buildings built several cebturies ago and were mostly brick and mortar construction. Unreenforced masonry is the worst building method for earthquakes. Modern building codes designed with earthquake safety really wpuld have made a big difference.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.Comment

Here we go... first off, many of those are HISTORIC buildings. Italy does have strong building codes though, even in older buildings. They did improve standards after the 2009 Earthquake in L'Aquila.

Explain this... Many older structures in Italy have stood for centuries and centuries through hundreds if not thousands of quakes. Italy is one of the most seismic areas of Europe. Modern structures don't last as long, yet ancient and older structures made of stone and brick do...
