  • Earthquake in Italy

The death toll in the Italian earthquake reaches 241 as rescuers continue efforts to find survivors in the rubble of Amatrice and nearby small towns.

Schools, hospitals and churches all destroyed. I hope the perpetrators of this attack are found and face justice.

The death toll in the Italian earthquake stands at 241 as thousands of rescuers continue efforts to find survivors.

Dozens are believed trapped in ruined Amatrice, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto, in mountainous central Italy.

Rescuers have advised journalists and bystanders to leave Amatrice urgently, as "the town is crumbling", the BBC's Jenny Hill says.

New cracks appeared in the town's hospital after strong aftershocks.

Officials revised down the number of dead after earlier giving a figure of 247.

The search for survivors went on through the night, amid hundreds of tremors and an aftershock which rocked already damaged buildings.

More than 4,300 rescuers are using heavy lifting equipment and their bare hands.

Many of the victims were children, the health minister said, and there were warnings the toll could rise further.

    I didn't see a thread.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

Err, is this a joke because Italy actually has put geologists in prison for failing to predict an earthquake?

I agree... while tastelessness has never stopped posters in the past, I've changed the title.
                  Sorry Dauphin... (not really)

Over 240 reported dead so far and many believed to still be trapped.

Well, let's try to be constructive.
earthquakes (greece is VASTLY earthquake pron, more than japan maybe) are measured in lethality by where they happen (sea is less harmful - earth is more harmful, earth near cities is very harmful) and depth.
surface ertahquakes are more devastating, deep tectonic plates movement no so much.

there are some models of predicting them, we have pioneered at least two. they are not 100% accurate (but they rather are) and also sometimes they tend to make people worried.

the thing is that this is not a natural catastrophy but a man made one.

after the devastating eqarthquakes of 1999 (which actually demolished a house of our own, luckily noone was killed - and fully refunded by the state) the laws changed and it's now 3 times x the maximum earthquake envisioned for that area, the foundations' strength of new buildings.

for old there is not much to do except "cement injections".
                    better than nothing.

I am outraged at some in this thread...

I agree with you. I hope they find more survivors. Many of those who died were just children.

                      This thread is beyond cold.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

You don't need to apologize for a difference of opinion and I respect your decision.

Having seen a number of news channels reporting of the incident I was trying to make a point that deaths due to followers of god are treated differently to deaths due to acts of god (many of which are attributed to the ill nature of the victims by the religious). I accidentally said act of terror when I meant to say act of god in the title, but that is by the by.

You understand that asking for class in a thread about kids deaths is a bit crash after you having supported the Iraq war right?
