My dad's girlfriend left for Italy the day after the quake. She is Italian and will be in the south though. My father will be jpining her in a couple weeks and then they will be touring Europe together for a month. I had a good chuck that he would be arriving two weeks after her because it tells me he doesn't want to spend so much time with her family.

On a different note the towns hit hardest apparently had most of their buildings built several cebturies ago and were mostly brick and mortar construction. Unreenforced masonry is the worst building method for earthquakes. Modern building codes designed with earthquake safety really wpuld have made a big difference.

Here we go... first off, many of those are HISTORIC buildings. Italy does have strong building codes though, even in older buildings. They did improve standards after the 2009 Earthquake in L'Aquila.

You always think you have answers for everything. It's irritating!

Have anymore insensitive comments you want to make?

The earthquake was so strong, not even the best building standards would have helped.

Jesus Christ, you must be brain damaged. Reread what I wrote and try to take the glasses of stupidity - 5 off this time. I mentioned that they were historic and then simply said modern structures built to an earthquake code would have faired better.

Seriously, man, I do not know what causes you to always go off the deep end but I suggest reading both the post you are reaponding to and your own response twice before hitting the post button. It might save you further embarrassment.

                    forgot about this

The Greek consulates and embassy in Turkey had their phone lines jammed with Turks calling to find out whether they could donate blood and one volunteer contacted Ambassador Corantis, offering to donate his kidney for a "Greek in need"

Keep up the personal insults. It isn't going to get you anywhere. You always seem to have these solutions to everything. Again, this earthquake was so shallow it wouldn't have mattered. It was so close to the surface.

The deep end? I read things as they are. Your comment was insensitive. And this post was reported. If you can't handle a bit of criticism, I don't know what else to say.

Edit: BTW, many older buildings were retrofitted.

Not really. If I did, I would have insulted him and I didn't.

Explain this... Many older structures in Italy have stood for centuries and centuries through hundreds if not thousands of quakes. Italy is one of the most seismic areas of Europe. Modern structures don't last as long, yet ancient and older structures made of stone and brick do...

I think the criticism was inappropriate and insensitive.

Snarky comments about the dominant religion of the region strike me as being in poor taste. Neutral-voiced comments about the structural stability of traditional forms of architecture from the region are germane and inoffensive. I'm looking at post 21, trying to find a way it could be construed as taunting the departed, and . . . I'm getting nothing, here.

Right. I will just ignore. Calling someone stupid is not constructive. I stand by that.
