The poor in India are actually worse off. Free trade is insanity and is an elitist idea.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

      • So how do you feel putting more money in the pockets of the elite and making the poor even more destitute?

            • I have my own small business (sole proprietorship, I am the only employee) which has brought me out of poverty, supports a family of 8, has sent 4 kids to college, and supports another business which consistently loses money to pay higher wages for the workers who were generally unemployed. Now they are employed in improving degraded land and producing high quality low price veggies for the local markets. This has allowed some of them to start their own businesses, improve their own land, build/improve their homes, keep their kids in school, buy transportation of their own, and have some extra money for enjoying their time off.

Free trade would have allowed me to increase wages further, improve more degraded land, and/or hire more workers. Instead a significant % of our capital goes to pay tariffs on tools and materials that aren't available locally. Also it makes it difficult to impossible to sell to foreign markets, greatly diminishing the potential to raise wages.

Not buying it. For most people, free trade damages their prospects and puts small business out of business. Then they are forced to work for low wages in either a sweat shop or factory.

Free trade is a capitalist lie and myth.

                      • So you think that free trade between California and the rest of the US hurts everyone who isn't rich?

                        • We don't have "free" trade. I still have to pay sales taxes.

I leave that for the free trade proponents who are selling people snake oil.

Oh. I didn't realize all the states were their own country. Are we governed by the Articles of Confederation?

                              • So free trade inside a countrys boundaries is good while free trade between countries is bad. That is so contradictionary that it doesn't make any sense.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
