Unfortunately there seem to be indications that the coup is on the brink of failure

Erdogan's the guy who doesn't know his Lord of the Rings, right? Good riddance.

Best thing to happen since the coup in Egypt. **** you, Erdogan.

Apparently he's seeking asylum in Britain. He picked the worst possible time to be a Muslim immigrant to the UK

              Gulen... is he behind this?

Certainly the military did turn against the government. I think only some elements of the police were still loyal to the military. This was in the planning for a long time.

Gulen's movement has denied any involvement...

                Who knows at this point.

This could have been the military being pushed to its breaking point. They were probably upset at how the situation was being handled in Kurdish areas and along the border.

In the last few minutes, Mr Erdogan's plane has landed at Istanbul airport, government sources say.
looks like the coup has been unsuccessful.

                      That is not yet determined.

And if he does survive this coup, his government will be weakened. He looked very weak thoroughout.

They had a lot to be upset at.
The military was always the factor that provided security that Turkey was ruled according to Kemal Ataturks principles (that means, a state close to western examples, instead of a Shariah state). Which also is, why there were several coups in the past decades, with the military replacing too fundamentalist rulers by more modersate ones.
Which is probably why Erdogan took steps to replace the high ranking militaries with his own people.

I guess, if coup has failed, there is nothing that will prevent that Erdogan will slowly (or even rapidly) turn the state into an islamist quasi autocracy.

if the very popular president, who can call his legion of supporters out onto the streets to defend him is giving speeches on television, and the internet is still working, then basically the coup will fail.

as for weakening the government, that's unlikely in my view. he will use this as an excuse to get rid of opponents in the military and civil service, and thus strengthen his grip on power. failed coups are rarely bad for leaders' popularity.

I think it could actually destabilize the country, and the failed coup may actually signify weakness in his government. It may also give Gulen more popularity.

If the coup wins Turkey could turn into a military dictatorship, with all the usual ****. If Erdo wins, what looks probable now that he's made it to Istanbul, Turkey turns more into his dictatorship, with more of his usual ****.

With Erdogan - it turns into Islamic State Turkey, as he will have full power to destroy the secular elements of Turkish army, state and society.

Hope I am wrong, but... will be interesting.
