  • Has time passed me by?

I don't really play games anymore. The last game I really played seriously was Age of Empires 2. I come from a time when you played MP to win and crushing people was fun and what people strived for. Competition in MP was a given, and you played to be number 1. Civilization 4 was a joke to me, a game made for kids and geared towards the lowest common denominator. The fact that it had mechanisms to prevent you from getting ahead, and actively assisted those behind, told me everything I needed to know. I felt like my IQ decreased every time I played it in MP.

I recently saw Civ6 was going to be coming out soon, and on a whim I bought the whole Civ5 game for 12$ on a steam sale. I decided to go on twitch to watch one of the Civ5 streams and began asking questions in the chat about the game.

    • Apparently Civ5 took the "catch up" mechanisms a step further and even allows you to vote to make someone's techs more expensive.
    • Disagreeing with the new generation of gamers automatically makes you a troll. What's worse is that they won't even argue with you; they'll just act offended that you said something outlandish, call you a troll, and leave it at that.
    • You apparently don't play games to win anymore, and I clearly "did not understand the point of civ5". Also, apparently it's boring if you can't catch up because if you're behind you'll lose and that's just no fun.
    • People should apparently not be allowed to create leads because "that's no fun."

I'm beginning to think that maybe "streamlining" (code for dumbing down) games was necessary given the current generation of limp wristed effeminate males who appear to be majoring in women's studies and are now taking their safe spaces to the internet and games. I assume Civ6 will have full blown Communism in effect and anyone found to be attempting to win in a multiplayer game will be properly reeducated. Given how cartoony the new Civ6 looks, and the types of people who appear to be attracted to this game these days, I think I'll just not waste my time and do something more productive. Apparently I have grown old and no longer understand the point of games.

You do sound pretty old. Good to see you though. The new game is dealing with the new world.

You should definitely try the Caveman2Cosmos mod for CivIV; it has a ton of controls that the user can adjust, including how much of a boost trailing civs are allowed to have.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I hear ya, man. I can't stand the pampered effeminate children who call themselves men today. They're oblivious, self-important hypocrites who alternate between boasting about how special and talented they are and then pouting when they find out the world isn't designed just for their precious, unique selves. Disgusting. Humiliating, even.

Ah, I'm sorry Lorizael. After re-reading my post I now realize I committed all kinds of micro aggressions against you. I insulted your area of study, made light of your preferred form of government, and probably even appropriated your culture in there somewhere. I'll step away now so you can heal, comrade.

I don't think a guy who ran away from civilization to grow tomatoes and who bought a site like Apolyton can talk about IQ.

Didn't civ2 have catch up mechanisms? I'm pretty sure your research costs were affected by how advanced the other civs were.

                    edit:

I guess even civ 2 was a babby game for babbies

Civ 2 also has a cheat where you could explore the entire map with a Trireme and easily rush-kill all early neighbors with Horsemen on Deity level.

I didn't use any of the cheats and exploits so I guess I was nevar any "good."

You didn't mention astronomy or the ever-expanding telepathic techno blob, so I'm honestly not sure what the **** you're talking about.

There was also an easy, undetectable program you could download and use in MP that could give you unlimited money, any tech, or any unit... instantly.

Someone on The Zone showed it to me once and said that everybody used it. I forgot what it was called.

I am rather sad they are sticking so closely to Civ 5 for Civ 6. I really just want an updated Civ4 with a hex map and better graphics.
