IMHO the closest to DF that you can find out there ... with better graphics and research.
(in contrast to DF, however, the evil can also appear within your fortress, as unlit corners in your fortress can serve as possible spawning points for hostile creatures)
I think Rimworld is better. One of the reasons is that it's not just a copycat DF clone like Gnomoria.

IMHO Rimworld is nice ... but I am definitely missing the ability to move between z-levels (in order to dig down/up), which Rimworld (in contrast to DF and Gnomoria) is lacking

I downloaded the latest version (at the time) of Dwarf Fortress a few months ago and the game kept crashing before I even got past the world-building stage so I gave up.

I just started a new game (with DF 43.0.5) and started a fortress ... funny thing:
My dwarven mother civilization seems to be ruled mostly by goblins

The baroness consort ... a goblin
          the diplomat ... a goblin
          the general ... a goblin
also, 9 of the 14 barons of the realm are goblins

You could try it with one of the many graphic packs that were created by the community

"Capital Letters" is not a sentence and should not end with a period.

The only things that end in periods are relationships.

                        Pregnancy expectations?

Dwarf fortress is the ****. Just don't get too attached to your first couple of fortresses.

It always sounded like more of a hellish timesuck than anything actually fun to me, which is odd since usually I'm all about the "gardening" aspect of Civ. Also ironic, since I feel fairly confident that at least one of the programmers is on the spectrum.

                            Sinclair Spectrum?

It's as much of a time sink as a C2C game. It's not as complicated as it looks like.

It's been my experience that relationships end in exclamation points.
