Spanish has pretty much spanishified versions of the latin weekdays (which are probably pretty similar in all other romance languages), which are in turn named after the 7 planetary spheres in Ptolemy's model, with the weekends replaced by the more 'bibilical' versions after the sabbath and the lord's day

especially how many cultures just use a simple numbering format for the days of the week.

I am especially surprised that Iceland doesn´t follow the germanic tradition but rather also adopts a simple numbering schema ...
very surprising considering the fact that from all scandinavian countries Iceland is the country that still has the closest relationship to the Æsir (i.e. the gods from the germano-scandinavian pantheon) ... Asatru even is an officially recognized religion in Iceland

It's also fascinating how far away cultures like asian and indian also have 7 days of the week

the asians named them after the elements or something but they also have sunday for the sun and monday for the moon

the indian seems identical to the greek/roman system which according to the article evolved like this

romans copied the greek system then transfused it to west and south europe, germanics adopted it but changed it somewhat to their gods

now a good question is how and why many countries changed that to the numeric system

turks named their sunday bazaar day

the maps is a tiny bit wrong. kyriaki has nothing to do with latin. but oh well

the biggest european uniformity is definitely saturday with only the UK/albanians and scandinavia/baltics differing.
